Neil Ostwinkle is growing up in a Las Vegas trailer court where he realizes early on that he'd rather marry the Professor, not Mary Ann or Ginger. He prefers Aunt Louise's colorful makeup kits to drab green army men, and he swaps clothes with his best bud Rebecca Mooney because her silky dresses feel like magic on his skin. But in school he learns that being different has ...more

One of the best things about this book that made it special for me was the awesome trip down memory lane. The pop culture references for the period of time were spot on and had me smiling as the memories surfaced and made me think over and over again, “OMG, I remember that!”

The other aspect of the book that made it special was getting what felt like a very realistic view into growing up gay in the 80’s and 90’s. Besides growing up realizing he was

Every so often I’ll pick up a book that truly captures my heart and sparks my imagination, and this remarkable debut novel by Eric Gober is one of them. Masterfully written, it follows Neil Ospwinkle as he negotiates an unconventional upbringing, endures the heartache of his teenage years, and sets out as a young adult to pursue his ambition to become a make-up artist. I quickly fell in love not only with the distinctive style, but with the quirky characters and the colorful craziness of Las ...more

Secrets of the Other Side is a beautifully told tale. Every evening I sat down to read the book, I felt transported to an old trailer park in Las Vegas. The descriptions were vivid, and the stories felt so real. As I turned the pages, I could feel hot sun form sweat beads on my forehead, taste dry desert dust, and see run down trailers, old cars, and colorful characters, especially Neil’s mom and his Aunt Louise in her bright makeup and cocktail waitress uniform. I fell in love with Neil ...more

Secrets of the Other Side is a coming of age story about a young Neil Ostwinkle who, over time, graduates from watching the Wizard of Oz to getting a degree in English and launching a career as a make-up artist. Neil is being raised by an occasional single mother living in a Las Vegas trailer park situated next to an air force base where jets are constantly shuddering and disrupting life. It serves almost as a metaphor to the disquieting relationships Neil tries to establish with select ...more

Eric Gober is a fan of quirky characters, family drama, coming-of-age stories, and the angst of good romance. He rolls them into one in his award-winning debut novel, Secrets of the Other Side.

When not writing, he can be found curled up with a good book, seeking inspiration from the big screen, or hanging with great friends. He is an avid runner and enjoys trail running and half marathons.
