Seven-year-old Helen Marie Heffner has a knack for getting into trouble, followed close behind by her older sister, Leona Mae. Whether it’s walking the barn beams like a tightrope, fooling the neighbor boys into thinking they’re being chased by a fiery jack-o-lantern, or making a mess rather than transferring a pattern for Mama’s Christmas surprise, Helen comes out the win ...more

A delightful middle grade novel from award-winning author, Lu Ann Staheli. Readers will fall in love with Helen Marie, a precocious seven-year-old, who looks up to her older sister, Leona Mae, the two of them getting into trouble more often or not (think Laura Ingalls…). I laughed out loud at Helen Marie’s antics and loved her relationship with her mother and father. Set in 1922 southern Indiana, the family faces financial hardships, like so many around them. But they are blessed with a humble l ...more

I just finished reading "Leona and Me, Helen Marie" and have to say that it was one of the most charming and delightful books I've read recently. Set in small town Indiana in 1923, the story follows 7 year hold Helen on her hijinks and escapades with her older sister, Leona Mae. Centered around this lively and sweet little girl and her family, the plot reads like a winding, episodic tale rather than a traditionally structured plot and I love it. The family won my heart and Helen's voice shines t ...more

I couldn't help but think of some of my favorite Richard Peck novels when reading this story. It was wonderful. I absolutely fell in love with 7 year old Helen Marie and her big sister Leona. From the first page you will find yourself laughing at their antics and wondering what they could possibly get into next. There are profound and entertaining "one liners" that are still bouncing around in my head. The author's descriptions make it easy to feel the 1920s Indiana heat. I swear I can distinctl ...more

Leona and Me, Helen Marie (A Small Town U.S.A. Novel) was such a fun book to read. I was smiling through much of it. The stories in this book reminded me so much of the stories my own parents have shared with me through the years. It is so obvious the difference between life back then and life now. There was something special about life in the early 1900's. Life was so much simpler in many ways and much harder in others.

Lu Ann Staheli beautifully retells the stories of her mother and her aunt as
