Science fiction is a genre that is difficult to grasp. The book is a collection of essays focused on writing and selling your work as a product. It contains advice on everything from characterization to world-building. There are eleven essays in the book, each written by a towering figure in the science fiction community.
The advice is helpful. First, keep writing. If you are a writer, write. Keep notes of your ideas. Know your audience. Finally, if you become successful, keep receipts and paystubs for the tax man.
I enjoyed the book. Thanks for reading my review, and see you next time.

Taking into account that the author essays in this book was written in the 1970's, much of the viewpoints and many unforseen trends have come and went since this book was published.
However, it is a transitory time between the golden era of SF and the present. The suggestions to read the classics and the earlier authors is still an important piece of advice.

For a novice like me, especially in this genre, the experts provide useful insight on world-building, alien creating, and future predicting. In addition, the contributors are not shy about providing examples of what they consider to be poor representations of science fiction craft as well as successful models.

June 27, 2012I finally found it! After years of trying to remember what it was called. I still don't know what to rate it, though, since I haven't read it in ages and my opinion of it may have changed since then.
