When it comes to race cars, J.E. Pendleton knows his stuff. Granted, I'm not a gearhead but I have a bit of knowledge about fast cars and while this isn't a 'how to' manual, Pendleton gives you enough information to set you well on the path to building your own 'Special'. He also builds a powerful romance and shows the reader how deeply the love of a family can flow.

There's a lot to love about this book. The story of Billy and Sally's relationship, how Carl's son Babe grows from a ch

This book is a super read for post WWII enthusiasts. What a great time it was! J.E. Pendleton does a terrific job of characerizing the period, taking you back in time to a more simple life.

If you are an auto fan, and all about cars, this book is for you! You come to love the descriptions of this "special" vehicle. He also expertly weaves in a romance to boot!

The Special by J. E. Pendleton is a novel reminiscent of times past, a country rich in innocence teetering on the edge of war. Billy Pendleton hitchhikes his way to California, where he becomes intrigued in the race car scene and meets a beautiful woman Sally, who he falls for hook, line and sinker. He hooks up with Carl and his son, Frank (Babe) and they not only build a race car but become the best of friends. It is Babe who narrates the story many decades later to Billy Pendleton's nephew.

I finished the book and enjoyed it very much. So, here goes:

This is a captivating tale of a few people who, through circumstance, come together to build a racecar during one of the most trying times in our history. The tale of how and why they bond is told in a folksy, conversational style that make you feel as if you know them personally.

This book is a must-read! The author wrote an incredible story that appeals to men and women alike. Every detail is thorough, the characters are well-developed, and it flows in such a way that makes it read very easily. Whether you enjoy it for the technical aspects surrounding the race car or WWII, or are drawn by the phenomenal story of love and family, you will not be disappointed by 'The Special'.
