We all encounter times when our spirit feels dry, when doubt looms.

The opportunity to tour Israel came at a good time. For months, my life has been a mindless plodding through necessary routine, as monotonous as an all-night shift on an assembly line. Life gets that way sometimes, when nothing specific is wrong but the world around us seems drained of color. Even my weekl

This is an excellent book about the author's recent visit to Israel.

Lynn Austin is one of my favourite fiction authors and this is her first non-fiction work. Facing pressure and sadness from the home front, she and her husband embarked on a tour of Israel. It's impossible to walk in the footsteps of Jesus and other heroes of faith without getting an attitude overhaul and fresh perspective. I knew I was in for a treat from the start, when they arrived at Ben Gurion Airport.

In the Desert of Zin,

Pilgrimage with the subtitle, My journey to a deeper faith in the land where Jesus walked, is an autobiographic account of Lynn Austin's trip to Israel. It provides an interesting look at many of the historical sites in this country with Lynn's personal and Biblical comments.

While this was an interesting read, I'd have to say I prefer Lynn's fictional writing. I kept getting the feeling throughout the book that Lynn was keeping something from me. Lynn admits to being an introvert and I suspect

Lynn Austin brings biblical history forward as she shares her journey thru the Holy Land

I'm going to the Holy Land in a few months. after just finishing another book by Lynn Austin, I went on Amazon to see what else she may have written. I was delighted to see this book and I was not disappointed. I will read it 2 more times before my trip. the book is packed full of history, biblical insights, and Bible references. but she also brings it home to modern day. I loved this book.

This book was full of gems. I started reading it at a time when I felt like I was in a spiritual desert and it really hit the spot. I am a great fan if Lynn's biblical fiction, but this book certainly didn't disappoint me and I would recommend it to anyone wanting to draw closer to God by understanding some of their spiritual roots.

Relating and personal

This book is unlike all of her other books, because she’s writing it from her own experience. It’s very spiritual and enlightening.

It’s nice to see that she is human and normal, and she doesn’t hold anything back. I admired her vulnerability. She opened not only her life, but her heart and fears as well.

I’m curious to see what kind of book she creates after this close walk with God in His neighborhood. I’m sure He gave her quite an experience in which to head with her wor

I love her open honesty. She found herself in a spiritual desert. Praise God she found her way back. She really gives you food for thought about how easy it is to be taken off track. Complacency is a dangerous thing in our walk with our Lord. She shows us all ways to travel to find our way back if we find ourselves journeying that path. Good read. Honest person. Yes I would recommend this book.

It is unfortunate that the author chose to use scriptures that have been altered "again" by people who presume to change the word of God. When I read of people who don't have the full understanding and light of the Lord's gospel, I ache for them. Grateful for knowledge.

Amazing! I started reading this before I went to Israel and finished after, but I really wish I'd had it while I was experiencing the places she was talking about. This was like a memoir/devotional and had so much meat to it. I highly recommend it to everyone!

When it showed up in the list of books available for review, I jumped on it. A nonfiction book by one of my favorite authors? I couldn't wait to start reading it.

Pilgrimage is subtitled: My Journey to a Deeper Faith in the Land Where Jesus Walked. I was excited to see what Ms. Austin learned while spending time in the same places Jesus lived.

The book started off a bit slow but quickly became more interesting. Austin shares a very personal experience of how God spoke to her through her Bible rea

A ritual happens around this time of year between now and the New Year…resolutions. Some are goals like reading through the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation, but how many continue reading, especially when they come to the book of Leviticus? Another resolution many make is in regard to their physical appearance, not that that is a bad idea either. Somethin

Bestselling author Lynn Austin takes readers on a nonfiction journey in her latest book, Pilgrimage: My Journey to a Deeper Faith in the Land that Jesus Walked. Spiritual lethargy is something most Christians experience sometime in their Christian lives. When the cares of the world threaten to overcome them and it seems like they are stale and dry. Austin's simple, yet poignant portrayal of her own struggles with these issues makes for an incredible read. Her journey through to the places where ...more

A series of losses, disappointments, and unpleasant surprises have pummeled Lynn Austin. She is feeling bruised, spiritually dry, and, in plain words, depressed. And so she has high hopes for an opportunity to travel around Israel for two weeks:

“Spiritual renewal is what I long for … as I begin this pilgrimage. I want to see the bigger picture of His plan and learn to accept His will in all things. I want to revitalize my prayer life. … Maybe I’ll be able to let go of my own will and face the ch

This book is different than her others. It is personal, of course, so I expected it to be different. But there is a different feel to it even. At the start of the book I could feel the dryness she talks about. Reading through it, it would be so easy to think 'gee, she has it good; why is she down?' and she knows this. It is very easy for us to focus on the positives of others' lives while only focusing on the negative of our own. It is also easy to look at our lives and think that we can't possi ...more

"I've decided to accept the churning waves as an invitation from God to draw closer to Him, to dig deeper into His Word, to seek Him with all my heart and soul and strength. Most of all, to begin to pray to Him in a better way. Perhaps I will find a compass or a book of sailing instructions, or at least a life preserver. Maybe, just maybe, this pilgrimage to Israel will get me started on that new journey." (p. 14)

I received a copy of this book courtesy of the publishers via the LibraryThing Early Reviewers programme in exchange for an honest review.

The book was really interesting and held my attention throughout. On the one hand it’s very much a travelogue of the author’s journey across Israel, complete with details about some of the historical places she visited and the history behind them. In many cases, she also connected the places with biblical passages and stories. I admit, my memory of certain boo

Very high on the bucket list of my life travels is Israel. I long to see the places Jesus and his disciples walked. To see where miracles happened, where He taught, where He loved the least of these and where He rose. I know it would be life changing.

And now, after reading Lynn Austin’s journey, Pilgrimage: My Journey to a Deeper Faith in the Land Where Jesus Walked, through the holy lands and the spiritual experience she had from the trip, it only solidified my desire to go. This honest and rea

Timely and wonderful - I was going through my own dry period and her journey helped me. Lynn Austin has written a travelogue of sorts - a journey of her body, heart and mind. She was in a dry spell where not even her prayers or her worship felt normal. She embarks on a journey to Israel to walk in the places of the Bible. Her journey begins in the wilderness of Zin, a dry dusty desert that reflects her present spiritual life. The tour progresses through to Jerusalem and on to Galilee and the coa ...more

In Pilgrimage, Lynn feels spiritually numb after a year in which all of her children moved away and several beloved family members passed away. She’s mourning the loss of the people she loved as well as of her dream of being a cookie-baking, story-reading, hands-on grandma. She finds all these changes so difficult to accept that she thinks she may actually upset with God, and she suspects that is the reason for her spiritual lethargy. She writes:

Spiritual renewal is what I long for, too, as I be

Though this book is written by a very good author, I just couldn’t get myself to finish it. Books based on personal life experiences are good, but just nor for me. If I’m gonna read a non-fiction book, it’ll be a biography not a Christian living or autobiography book.

That being said, it is a really good book from what I did manage to read, about half, it is deep and thought provoking. I was challenged to look deep inside myself and ask “Is my life really a blessing to others around me? Do I live

I can not recommend this book enough. I have enjoyed Lynn Austin’s writing for years, especially her five book series based on Biblical books of Chronicles and Kings. She made those Old Testament characters come to life. Therefore, it was with great anticipation that I read PILGRIMAGE, and it exceeded my expectations. In this non-fiction account of her most recent trip to Israel, she shared her own faith journey, her thoughts and emotions while seeing and experiencing her Israel tour, appropriat ...more

This is the first book I read from Lynn Austin. She is a Christian fiction writer and I don't read much fiction for adults. I received this book as an advanced reading copy. It is a narrative of her travel to Israel. In it she weaves the places, with history, Scripture and her own applications of what she has learned. According to the author this trip to Israel was to awaken her from the monotonous and dry Christian life she was experiencing. Her voice is clearly heard as she takes you to each o ...more

I was given the gift to travel to Israel with Ray VanDeerLann October 2012, to my amazement Lynn Austin described my 14 days hiking through the desert to the holy city. I was truly moved by her applications of the history, rich culture, and Biblical knowledge that she shared in each story. I believe all saints find restlessness in our daily walk of sanctification. For many years, Lynn Austin nurtured a desire to write but frequent travels and the demands of her growing family postponed her career. When her husband's work took Lynn to Bogota, Colombia, for two years, she used the B.A. she'd earned at Southern Connecticut State University to become a teacher. After returning to the U.S., the Austins moved to Anderson, Indiana, Thunder Bay, Ontario, and later ...more
