It is a Civil War story of Sydney, a young man who moves north to live with his aunt & uncle after the death of his beloved (and slave-holding) parents and how things change his mind. ...more

As soon as I saw that One Traveler was about Wilkes-Barre, a town about twenty minutes away from where I live, during the era of the Underground Railroad, I knew I had to give it a try. I was curious to see what a town that I have been to was like during this important time in American history. Luckily, Alison Treat managed to present Wilkes-Barre as well as surrounding areas in an interesting as well as informative way, and more importantly, she also presented an intriguing and well developed s ...more

This historical fiction book is a great read for the whole family. It is a Civil War story of Sydney, a young man who moves north to live with his aunt & uncle after the death of his beloved (and slave-holding) parents. His aunt and uncle are conductors for the underground railroad, so Sydney has to come to terms with the dissonance in the lives of his parents and his uncle's family. I'm reading it aloud to my sons.. and I bought some extra copies at Christmas for the history buffs and young ad ...more

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Alison Treat brings to life her characters at the beginning of the civil war in North East Pennsylvania. The tales of the underground railroad, plantation life in Georgia and the timeless coming of age of young adults all come together in this story that leaves you thinking of the characters after the book is closed. Her writing style is refreshing and I'm hoping she has another story for us in the works :)

Perspective of divided loyalties

Loved it, insightful and interesting, suspenseful without bright terrify. If you like a gentle romantic fiction filled with historical perspective this is for you.
It was an interesting blend of cultures . But what happens next to them in Pennsylvania would be a good next book

Romance, a Moral Dilemma, a Family Secret

Heartbroken after the death of his parents, Sid leaves his home in Georgia and travels north to Pennsylvania to be with his aunt and uncle. On the eve of the Civil War, he's leaving behind his sweetheart, Catherine, and his whole way of life. In Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, he's exposed to his aunt and uncle's involvement in the Underground Railroad. Helping people is good, but this is in direct conflict with the law. He misses Catherine, but there are oth

OK, a couple balls are mentioned, but in the same sentence with barbecues. This Book is about real people with real problems that the average joe can relate to. For seventeen-year-olds the world is about fitting in, finding the place for everything (family, friends and lovers) and figuring out (or deciding depending on how you look at it) who you are. What kind of a person are you going to be. What is your character? How do you deal situations when you've made a mistake or when somebody else has ...more
