Picked this up because I enjoy his unfiltered view of Northern Maine in his weekly columns. The writing style is vivid and definitely not the typical "Murder She Wrote" type of New England characters. Not a folksy wise-rustic in the bunch.

Sex scenes, though definitely hot, take over the book (which isn't a problem unless you start to feel like that's all there is to the book--which I did--and it isn't why you picked the book up). Also, needed more in-depth characterization and more complication

It seemed like a good idea at the time... Sex, Drugs and Blueberries by Crash Barry explores how quickly things can go wrong when someone makes a series of bad decisions. Ben is starting a temporary job picking blueberries to make ends meet and falls in with some bad characters. Things quickly spiral out of control and Ben starts looking for a way out, but still keeps making bad decisions.

I liked the title and I thought the book started off well, but I quickly lost interest. Failed and broke musician and his wife move to a depressed area to buy land cheap and live off the grid. He meets some folks and soon is in the midst of porn and a drug ring, not to mention cheating on his wife. Some may feel it channels Thompson or Bukowski, I sincerely disagree - it's not even close in talent level. Simply not my cup of blueberry tea.

I was hoping for a real life portrayal of life in rural downeast Maine. This started out as exactly that kind of story, but after a great introduction to the art of blueberry raking it quickly devolves into surreal circcumstances, and finally explicit sex scenes take over the book-- the last 1/4 seemed more like a Penthouse column than a novel. Crash Berry can really write. I hope he continues to write about Maine--with better character development and fewer sex scenes.

Ok so I read about this book in Down East. While the reviewer had warned that the book was a bit.. ah..."gritty" this was a GROSS understatement - many parts in my opinion would qualify as pornographic - too much information and very uncomfortable. I do think that (sadly) the story did capture some of the goings on and circumstances in areas of Maine and beyond.

I have to say I was disappointed in this book. I read the review in Down East Mag and thought that it was going to be a good read and funny, but have to say found it very unrealistic and hard to finish.

Soft-core porn or a semi-authentic account of the blueberry harvest? Perhaps a bit of both. Some characters painted wonderfully richly; not all interactions believable.
