Wow, what a thrilling intense adventure through time, that takes us through corruption, conspiracies, betrayals, lies, deception and murder!!! THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN is full of soo much awesomeness, all packed in one little book!!!

I don't even know where to begin with all of this book's awesomeness! The world building was so complex and full of layers of plot and character development that made this book what it was, a bombshell of a debut!!

Gosh! I didn't enjoy this book. I dragged myself through it. I didn't like Amanda/Iris. She was judgmental, whiny and really not that great as everyone made her seem.

This book is nothing short of brilliant. Seriously, I ZOOMED through it. The plot is deliciously twisty, the characters are so well-drawn(and kick butt!), and the world building is top-notch. I loved the mystery elements, the time-travel bits, the quick pacing, and the general awesomeness of the heroine.

I honestly cannot WAIT for this book to release.

So when her name is called among the graduates, she's as stunned as her peers. Before she can even wrap her mind around the fact that she won't see her boyfriend, Abe, until he graduates and is able to join her, a man in a green tie presents her with her assignment. He wants her to join the Annum Guard and travel through time to help change history. But being a part of such a super-secret government organization comes with a price: she has to leave her old life behind, including Abe, forever. In this, she has no choice. She's either in, or they'll lock her away where no one would ever believe her crazy claims that a secret time traveling branch of the government even exists.

This book had my attention from start to finish. I loved Amanda, code name iris (meet the exception to the naming rule). She's a kick-ass female lead with just the right amount of sass. Her reactions felt realistic given the circumstances. I would agree that some of her choices were selfish, but she definitely grew to understand the consequences of said choices as the book wore on, which I liked.

Abe and Amanda were super cute together in the beginning, but this is where the book fell a little flat for me. Once Amanda is taken from Peel, we don't really get to see their relationship. With as close (and I mean planning-a-life-together-after-Peel close) as these two were in the beginning, I had a MAJOR issue with his complete 180 later in the book. He actually has her at gunpoint over some garbage the badie tells him. He's going to believe a complete stranger over the girl he claimed to love and want to spend the rest of his life with? Just like that? What the hell, dude?! Not cool!

Other more minor peeves:

This is a secret organization with fancy code names: First generation guards were given numbers, second generation guards were named after the Greek alphabet (Alpha, Beta...). Okay, not too shabby... But third generation guards are named after...wait for it...COLORS. I was feeling super bad for Orange, who also happened to have orange hair. Tragic. The names just never sat right with me, I guess. I loved Yellow (sounds weird, right?). I'm glad we got to see another side of her, beyond Amanda's initial judgment.

The plot was rather predictable, except Abe's reaction when we finally see him again near the end. But who could honestly predict that the love of someone's life would be such an asshat?!

Overall: The Eighth Guardian was a quick and enjoyable read with an awesome female lead. Things wrapped up nicely, but I'm still eager to see what happens next... ...more

Woah. That was an intense and adventurous read! Even though there were parts that really annoyed me, seriously I considered putting the book down, I got really into it and loved it in the end. I like the fact that this is not an insta love story, and focuses rather on a "heroine" with selfish tendencies (think Katniss). I enjoyed reading the book in a the way someone enjoys a sugary dessert - all fluff, no nutrients. It's fun but I wish there was more substance underneath. Hard to rate... enjoyment-wise? Pretty good. But parts start to unravel when you think about them.

If you think about McCardle's approach to Time Travel, there is a paradox issue... The way the book is set up, it seems like the people who "enhance" the past can remember the previous history (their memories move into the parallel universe uncha I enjoyed reading the book in a the way someone enjoys a sugary dessert - all fluff, no nutrients. It's fun but I wish there was more substance underneath. Hard to rate... enjoyment-wise? Pretty good. But parts start to unravel when you think about them.

I just don't know if this version of time travel will be sustainable, given the paradox issues & I am disappointed in the lack of depth among the characters)

Time Travel.....What a difficult subject to write about. I don't normally enjoy time travel books because it's just too far fetched and there are so many factors involved and it's extremely hard to wrap my head around it. She should have trusted that sinking feeling in her gut when she first saw the man with the green tie at her tests on Testing Day. After her name was called to graduate she went up and got the envelope with her assignment and went to her dorm room, and he was sitting there, waiting for her. The envelope containing the name of the agency she'd been assigned to. . . all it had were two words. Annum Guard.

Suddenly she is at the Annum Guard house being told her name is now Iris. Everyone she's ever known, family, friends, all gone now, for Amanda Obermann no longer exists. Just Iris. Annum Guard is highly classified, and very few people know of its existence, which could explain why she's never heard of it in all the years she's been training to be a government operative of some sort. She's there on a trial basis, as the group wants to expand, and they need a test subject. Her choices are to stay and follow orders or end up being 'disposed of.' Clearly she elects to stay. But she blows her first training mission, and nothing is what it seems. From day to day she never knows what kind of treatment to expect from the leaders.

Eventually she gets sent on her first real mission, the mission that will determine if she stays at Annum Guard or is disposed of, as she knows far too much about them by this point to ever be set free. Her mission is to prevent something from happening. She's sent with two older operatives who have no intention of following her lead even though she'd been assigned team lead. Yet she manages to pull it off, because there's no way she's allowing them to dispose of her. Upon their successful return little things begin to start falling apart. She gets ahold of some confidential information and discovers some horrifying secrets. Secrets people in places of power will kill to keep. And they're trying to kill Iris. Luckily one of the other agents who catches up to her believes her, or does once the two read the proof Iris found. Proof that something is very wrong in the organization.

From here on out it is one nerve wracking jump through time after another as Iris and her colleague try to stay one step ahead of the bad guys while unraveling the mystery at the same time. The question is, will they make it, or will the secret die with them? Along the way Iris grows up, seeing just how selfish she'd been since the whole experience with the Guard began. Her colleague admits it's not all Iris' fault, that the others in the organization resented her before she even arrived and they could have made more of an effort to be welcoming. Add that to all the lies they were both told and it becomes much easier to see how these two who had been at each other's throats were now literally putting their lives into each other's hands.

Fast paced, entertaining, full of interesting takes on what might have happened during certain historical events, this is a quick and fun read. It ended leaving me looking forward to the next installment in the series, as there are still so many unanswered questions, and mysteries yet to be solved. Not too mention safeguarding the country, for if this technology ever fell into the wrong hands the world as we know it could change in the blink of an eye, and no one, other than the jumpers, would even be aware that anything had changed. I really, really enjoyed this one.

This book is officially on my favorites list. You may have seen an update somewhere stating I had to force myself to put this book down and I wasn’t exaggerating. This was a story that continually had me saying to myself, “Just one more chapter” and when I finally realized how late it was and that I actually had to function the next day I did it. Nevermind that the second I got home from work I immediately opened it back up until I finished. So…if that isn’t jus I really, really enjoyed this one.

Amanda is a junior at The Peel Academy and to say that this school is pretty selective in their student population might be an understatement. See, this is where the CIA, FBI, and other government agencies go to find the talent for their organizations. Not only are the students smart, they can fight, shoot, and protect themselves.

With all of that said, the book opens on Testing Day. This is a random day each year where all juniors and seniors are forced to prove their abilities within the testing environments created by the academy. As a junior, Amanda knows that she doesn’t really have a chance of graduating (it hasn’t happened in a really long time) and she is ok with that. She has Abe (her boyfriend) and a plan for when they do graduate. However, as Amanda is testing, she notices one of the observers continues to watch her closely and even though she blew the first test, he continues to stay and observe. This in itself is odd but the way he watches her makes her begin to think something could be different this year.

As you can imagine, Amanda was right to think something was up. Post testing, her name is announced as a graduate and she is immediately taken out of the room. From here on out, the book is non-stop action and mystery. I admit there were absolutely some things that I didn’t see coming and I love it when that happens. Add to this the idea of time travel, historical events, and being able to successfully tie everything together and I have to applaud McCardle. She created a story that was exciting, mysterious, and that I didn’t want to put down until I found out everything that was going on.

Now, I can’t say much about what really is going on outside of the fact that Amanda finds out she was chosen to join a super secret organization called the Annum Guard and is questioning whether this is really the right place for her. She is also introduced to the other guards who all go by a code name…in their cases a color (Yellow, Violet, Indigo, Green, Blue, Orange, and Red). What I can tell you is that I loved the characters in this story. Amanda (Iris) is sarcastic and tough and it is clear that she is loyal to the people she loves. She also hasn’t had an easy life and there were times where I just wanted to climb into the pages and give her a hug. Because of the things that have happened in her life, she wants to hang onto the good things and that includes Abe.

The other guards were great too. We do get more exposure to some more than others but I think that was good because otherwise it might have gotten too overwhelming. Yellow is definitely more than I expected and I really did like her. She made Amanda see things that she normally wouldn’t have and I think she was a clear factor in her growth through the story. I would love to learn more about her background as well as Indigo’s. Both made an impact on Amanda and I will be interested to see what happens next for all of these characters.

Ok – so I hope I didn’t ramble on too much but if you take one thing away from this review, hopefully it is the fact that I really, really loved it and hope that you do too. If you are looking for a story filled with action and mystery definitely check this book out when you can. I will just be sitting here impatiently patiently waiting for the next book. ...more

It starts on Testing Day and Amanda notices a man intently watching her. She's a junior so Testing Day is generally considered a warm-up for her senior year, when she will graduate. She has a feeling, though, that she'll be graduating early and tells her boyfriend, Abe, who quickly dismisses it. Her name is, indeed, announced as a graduate, and s (4.5 stars) I wasn't sure what to expect with this book. It grabbed my attention right away and I had a hard time putting it down until I was finished. It starts on Testing Day and Amanda notices a man intently watching her. It's a scary experience and she learns that she has a new code name, Iris, which she will go by until the day she dies. She's now part of the Annum Guard and is thrown into a time travel situation. She's not given any training or information and manages to figure out what she needs to do. When she gets back, she starts learning more about the Annum Guard and not everyone is happy or welcoming and she doesn't necessarily want to be there, either. She learns that they're the guardians of time and project back in time to tweak the past to improve the present. As time goes on, she learns how being part of the Guard can help her answer questions she has about her father's death. Is she prepared to learn the truth?

I liked Amanda/Iris. She was tough and smart and didn't back down from a challenge. She had flaws, too, which Yellow eagerly pointed out to her. Yellow was a great character as well. She's a member of the Guard and hates Amanda/Iris on sight. I liked how their relationship evolved throughout the book. There were some other great characters that I loved, hated and didn't form an opinion of until the end. The Guard is an intense experience and I found myself holding my breath through certain parts. There are lots of twists and turns and this was such a fun read. There's a pretty good wrap up at the end but there's more to this story so I'm definitely looking forward to book two!

My only complaint is that there was some language, including two uses of the "f" word.

I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.

The Eighth Guardian was so much fun - this book kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved the time travel and intrigue and all the different time periods and historical events. I was excited that so much of this book takes place in Boston, including a fantastic section that involves the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum Heist!

What an incredible read! The moment I picked up THE EIGHTH GUARDIAN I was hooked and literally flew through the book until the very end. As a fan of the Alias TV series, I fell in love with this book right away. Chapter one gives the reader a glimpse of the action and intrigue that this book has to offer and it doesn't disappoint! This was such a fun fast-paced romp of a book. Time travel in the Boston area, a secret government conspiracy, and a sassy MC added up to awesome. McCardle leaves you hanging from chapter to chapter making you turn the pages faster than Iris can jump through time. It's also smart and thought-provoking, opening up questions about how history could change if we really could time travel.

3.5 stars It started a little slow for me and it was hard to connect with the main character at first. But the more I read the more interesting it got so I'm happy I kept reading it. I did enjoyed the twist and turn of events this book took; it totally surprise me. The whole concept of the time travel and Annum Guard School that McCardle created is kind of cool. Very good story! Looking forward to book 2. I love the idea of time travel and visiting the past so this appealed to me immediately. It will be great to skype with the author this month and hear her discuss this book and the new one!
