No defrauda.

Nicely old fashioned in style but current in themes “The Pipe of Marcos” is a tale of a man who is looking for his lost friend in South America. The beauty of nature and the wobbling stability of politics are tangible as our gringo looks for clues in a small village filled with suspicious and frightened people. Not the most dramatic of tales, “The Pipe of Marcos” isn’t quite as sharp as one might hope, but it’s a pleasant read inviting the reader to join in on future adventures.

While neither the artwork nor the characters are as solid as the book's successor, La Isla de Nunca Jamás, this is still a solid graphic novel. Apart from telling an engaging story, it manages to make some interesting commentary, primarily stemming from the Zapatista General Marcos and his emblematic pipe.

A solid first book in what looks to be a fantastic series.
