Description for DARK CITADEL
After Kari breaks up with her date during Beginner's Night at Club Shadowlands, she's given the option to continue with an experienced dominant. Despite her steamy fantasies about BDSM, the inexperienced schoolteacher plans to simply observe. Yet under the unyielding hands of Master Dan, she not only participates, but gives him everything he asks for. There is nothing she can hide from him. Not her passion…or her love.

Still mourning the death of his wife, Master Dan avoids getting involved with women and he never takes a sub twice. But this modest little beginner is such a sweetie, one night is far from enough. As he plumbs her responses, taking her ever deeper into the world of BDSM, the gentle submissive begins to show him how barren his life has become and what a dark citadel he's made of his heart.

During their three nights together, the teacher will learn to submit...can she teach the master to love?

A New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, she’s renowned for writing heart-wrenching romances with laugh-out-loud dialogue, alpha males, and absolutely sizzling sex.

I met my dearheart when vacationing in the Caribbean. Now I won’t say it was love at first sight. Actually since he stood over me, enjoying the view down my swimsuit top, I might have been a tad peeved—as well as attracted. But although we were together less than two days and lived on opposite sides of the country, love can’t be corralled by time or space.

We’ve now been married for many, many years. (And he still looks down my swimsuit tops.)

Nowadays, I live in the west with this obnoxious, beloved husband and a seventy-pound lap-puppy. I’m a gardener, and I love nurturing small plants until they’re big and healthy and productive…and ripping defenseless weeds out by the roots when I’m angry. I enjoy thunderstorms, collecting eggs from the chickens, and visiting the local brewery for the darkest, maltiest beer on tap. My favorite way to spend an evening is curled up on a couch next to the master of my heart, watching the fire, reading, and…well…if you’re reading my books, you obviously know what else happens in front of fires.

**Big Sigh** After reading Comfort Food and Mercy I was really looking for something similar that didn't include the horrible "sharing without consent" that I had experienced in on of the books before. Unfortunately, I think I have entered the genre at the top of the ladder.....I enjoyed Shadowlands VERY MUCH!! If I had not read the other 2 books I would be making everyone read it. I still might make everyone - giggle.

Master Z in this story is the closest I have come to DomWard (if you know what I mean) he really cares about Jessica. He seems "in tune" with her feelings and doesn't thrust (snicker) her into something she doesn't want. I found him to be the man of my dreams!!!!

This is a Fantastic read for someone who wants a little BDSM in their life, but doesn't want to be forced to service 2 jerks who want to beat her to death - LOL!!!

Read it - you will enjoy it!!!

I love the way this author writes. I like how the women in the books are not stick women. They have shape, curves, padding. I like that the men are strong, soft, tender, demanding yet yeilding, controlling and giving. I find myself wishing I were about 20 years younger, and knowing were the nearest 'club' might be!!! What a wondrful way to spend a few hours at night or a Saturday afternoon. YUM~~~

Club Shadowlands - Club Shadowlands has been on my TBR pile for quite some time. I’m so glad I finally got around to reading it, because it ended up being a great story. It’s an ultra-steamy, erotic, contemporary romance that begins with our heroine, Jessica, returning home from a bad date in a rainstorm. Her car hydroplanes off the road into a water-filled ditch in a rural area, leaving her hiking through the downpour in search of help. She comes upon a well-lit, inviting mansion, but the moment she arrives, she’s told that it’s a private club. When she’s finally allowed inside, Jessica is met at the door by a man who calls himself Master Z, and he sees to her every comfort including helping her warm up in a shower and getting her clean clothes. Then he shows her around the place, which she quickly realizes is a sex club. Despite having no experience with such a place, many of the things she sees oddly turn her on, making her wonder what’s wrong with her. However, Master Z proves to be a deliciously alluring host, who pushes her boundaries and gives her the most erotic pleasures she’s ever experienced in her life. But when morning comes, she still isn’t certain if she can be fully comfortable in his world and isn’t convinced that he’d ever want her for anything more than one night of mind-blowing sex.

Jessica is a straight-laced accountant who loves volunteering at an animal shelter in her spare time. She’s been out with a variety of guys and is somewhat sexually experienced, but most of those experiences have been underwhelming, leaving her feeling like sex is overrated. It doesn’t help that she’s petite, but plus-sized, and she’s very self-conscious of her curvy body after some unkind comments from men she’s dated in the past. When she arrives at Club Shadowlands, she’s instantly attracted to Master Z, but certain that a hunky guy like him would never truly want someone like her. When he surprises her by giving her plenty of attention, she’s drawn to his alluring charm, and turned on by many of the things happening around her, she can’t resist becoming more intimate with him. He leaves her more pleasured and satisfied than she’s ever felt in her life, but she’s still very uncertain about a lot of things. When he invites her back the next weekend, she simply can’t say no, but she also can’t help wondering if there can ever be anything more between them than these stolen moments of incredible sex. Jessica is a very relatable heroine who is equal parts innocent when in comes to the types of activities going on in the club and curious adventurer who can’t resist exploring her body’s passionate side. She’s a little bit feisty, unwilling to just stand by when she thinks someone is in distress, a very admirable quality, but one which gets her into a bit of trouble with Master Z.;-) She’s also a woman whose self-esteem has been damaged, leaving her with a lot of doubts, but Master Z helps to put her totally at ease and makes her feel more like a desirable woman than she ever has before.

Although his age isn’t mentioned, I got the feeling that Zachary aka Master Z is a little more on the mature side. He’s described as having a bit of gray at the temples and is divorced with two college-aged children and is also ex-military. There are other tantalizing tidbits of character development revealed throughout the story, but since it was so much fun discovering those things for myself, I won’t give them away and spoil it for other readers. All I’ll say is that the more I found out about him, the more I fell for him. He started Club Shadowlands because he saw abuses going on in other sex clubs and wanted to see if he could do better. Master Z monitors everything very closely and if any dom gets out of hand, he kicks butt and takes names, while if any sub misbehaves, he doesn’t hesitate to dole out appropriate punishment. Others seem to think he’s a mind-reader, but in reality he’s an empath who can almost unerringly read people’s emotions, giving the story a touch of the paranormal. As someone who’s fascinated by the complexities of the human mind and psychic phenomena, I found this aspect of his character extremely appealing. When Jessica shows up at his door, looking like a drowned rat, his protective instincts kick in. He soon discovers that he hasn’t been this physically attracted to a woman in a long time, while he’s deeply intrigued by her mixture of innocence and adventurousness, as well as her surprising courage. It all makes him want to be the one to introduce her to his lifestyle and he quickly lays claim to her. I can’t even begin to say just how drop-dead-sexy and yummilicious Master Z is. Practically everything he did made me melt into a puddle. He’s completely calm, confident, and controlled, always even-tempered and never doing anything in anger, engendering almost instant trust in Jessica (and me as the reader). He can take a woman to the heights of sexual bliss, but then also hold her with the utmost tenderness, building her self-esteem with kind, caring words. I never thought I would call a dom sweet, but that’s exactly what Master Z is.

Club Shadowlands is the first book in the Masters of Shadowlands, which is a fairly long-running series. As such, readers are introduced to a few characters who will become heroes and heroines of future books. We get a couple of glimpses of the widowed Master Dan who will be the hero of the next book, Dark Citadel. Although she isn’t seen in this story, I’m pretty sure that Jessica’s sister, who was severely abused by her husband, becomes the heroine of the third book, Breaking Free, as well as Book #11, Protecting His Own. Master Cullen, who is the bartender at the club and one of the few other people Jessica connects with becomes the hero of the fourth book, Lean on Me. The doorman and security guard, Ben, becomes the hero of the tenth book, Servicing the Target. Then Master Z and Jessica get an additional story in Defiance, Book #13.5, which I think may be the final novella of the series.

BDSM romances can be hit and miss with me, but if you couldn’t already tell, Club Shadowlands was a huge hit. Once I got past the strangeness of a heroine trusting a man she’s barely met, I was fully invested, and Master Z proved himself more than worthy of that trust. He’s also not too hard-core, and everything he did made sense, so I didn’t get weirded out at any point. This is a novella-length story, albeit a longer one, so admittedly there isn’t a ton of character and plot development. However, there was just enough to keep it interesting. A part of me wished it could have been longer, to flesh out the characters and story a bit more. There are no unrealistic declarations of love, only a tacit agreement that they would begin dating. I wouldn’t have minded seeing Jessica and Master Z interacting outside the club environment, but it wasn’t a deal-breaker. I ended up giving it a perfect rating because the story gave me all the feels that I’ve come to expect in a romance and more, and it was also surprisingly well-written for an erotic romance. Not to mention, Master Z alone is worth giving the book five stars, and I loved Jessica, too. I just wasn’t quite ready to let them go so soon, so I’m definitely going to be looking forward to hopefully seeing more of them in future books of the series as well as in their wrap-up novella. With such a stellar read, I’ll definitely be putting Cherise Sinclair on my watch list and will make every effort to get to the next book very soon.

Note: This book contains explicit language and sexual situations including BDSM elements, voyeurism/exhibitionism, sex toys, anal play, and a light M/F/M menage scene, all of which could be objectionable to sensitive readers. Star Rating: *****

Dark Citadel - Dark Citadel is the second book in Cherise Sinclair’s Masters of the Shadowlands series. This one follows Master Dan who we briefly met in the first book. He’s still mourning the loss of his wife three years earlier and although he’s a regular dungeon master as Shadowlands, he never takes a sub for more than one night. He’s helping Master Z, the owner of the club, teach a beginner’s class when Kari comes in for the class with a date. However, her date behaves like a caveman, making her want to leave, until Master Z gives her the option of staying in the company of an experienced dom, namely Master Dan. Kari suspects she may have some submissive tendencies and wants to explore that possibility, and since she’s very attracted to Master Dan, she can’t resist the offer. After one delicious night together, Kari wants to continue her explorations, but she doesn’t really want any other dom besides Master Dan. While Kari has gotten under Master Dan’s skin, he doesn’t think he has anything to offer a sub other than a single night of pleasure, but she just might prove him wrong.

Kari is a sweet, gentle high-school biology teacher who was brought up in a buttoned-up family who didn’t talk about sex. She hasn’t had the best luck in relationships and feels like sex may be a bit overrated. But when her current boyfriend, Buck, suggests that they attend a beginner’s BDSM class, the things he describes to her that he’s learned about the scene turn her on, making her curious. Although she’s been hesitant to let Buck try these things on her, she agrees to go, but once there, Buck starts acting like a domineering jerk, making Kari uncomfortable enough to want to go home. When Master Z proposes that she stay in the care of Master Dan, her attraction to the big, handsome dom and her curiosity overrule the fears and misgivings in her head. In Master Dan’s experienced arms, she discovers her passionate side and finds more pleasure than she’s ever felt in her life. But when he behaves rather coldly at the end of the evening, she isn’t sure what to think. As luck would have it, she ends up having two more nights with him to figure out where he’s at and whether he can ever come to care for her in a more committed relationship. I deeply related to Kari’s sweetness and light, as well as her sense of being a fish out of water in the BDSM scene. She has a constant war going on inside her mind between being turned on by the things she’s seeing and doing at the club and feeling like there’s something wrong with her for wanting these things. I thought that her newness to the scene was well-done with her slipping up a number of times, which of course, can get her into trouble with Master Dan, but at the same time, she comes to trust him—and only him—with the care and pleasuring of her body.

Master Dan is a police detective and a widower who lost his wife in a car accident. He bears a lot of guilt, blaming himself for her being where she was at the time and hasn’t been able to move past her death for the three years since. He’s not looking to take on a permanent sub again, which is why he never spends more than one night with any of the subs who frequent the club even though he’s one of their most experienced and sought-after doms. When Kari shows up with her date, Dan is attracted to her sweetness and innocence, which is why after things go south for the couple and Z gently pushes him and Kari together, he agrees to tutor his “little sub” but just for the evening. In the short time he spends with her, Dan knows that she’s already getting under his skin, so he decides to put an end to it like all his other encounters. But when she comes back for the second night and seems poised to go with another dom, his possessive instincts kick in. It takes even more matchmaking on the part of his friends, though, and seeing Kari in her “natural habitat” outside the club, as well as an incident at the club, for him to finally realize that he may have found a woman he can’t live without. I didn’t end up falling for Master Dan quite as hard as I did for Master Z, but he’s a very appealing hero nonetheless. I enjoyed the way he eases Kari into the lifestyle, gradually working his way past her fears and doubts, while carefully reading her reactions. He gently pushes her out of her comfort zone, without being overly pushy, and in the process gives her the most mind-blowing sex of her life.

Since Masters of the Shadowlands is a fairly long-running series, several characters who have their own books in the series make appearances. Of course, Master Z (Club Shadowlands) owns the club and works with new trainees, while his sub, Jessica, befriends Kari. We’re introduced to Master Nolan who has just returned from a tour of duty with the military. He becomes the hero of the next book, Breaking Free, as well as book #11, Protecting His Own, along with Beth who is seen very briefly, clearly afraid of the games her dom wants to play with her. Nolan seems a bit harder around the edges than Z or Dan, so I’ll have to see if I end up liking him as well. Then there’s the bartender, Master Cullen, who I love for his outgoing personality and seemingly easygoing nature. I look forward to seeing him as the hero of the fourth book, Lean on Me. Then there’s Master Raoul, the DM who teaches one of the beginner’s classes and becomes the hero of the sixth book, To Command and Collar. We’re also introduced to Sam, who’ll be the hero of book #7, This Is Who I Am. Last but certainly not least, Ben, the doorman and security guard, will be paired with Mistress Anne, who is briefly mentioned, in Servicing the Target.

Overall, Dark Citadel was a very enjoyable story. At just under two hundred pages, it’s on the shorter side, straddling the line between long novella and short novel. It follows a similar track as the first book, diving right in with the steamy, sexy goodness and then later slows down just enough to give us a small peek into the characters’ lives outside Club Shadowlands. The story only spans the course of less than a week, and Dan and Kari only spend three nights together before getting their HEA. However, there are no unrealistic declarations of love, only a tacit agreement that they want to be in an exclusive dom/sub relationship. Also, much like with the first book, I wouldn’t have minded it being a little longer to flesh out the characters and their relationship a little more, but there’s just enough to make me feel like I knew them and that they were a good match. The way that Dan treats Kari and her willingness to comfort him over the loss of his wife add just the right touch of romance to what otherwise is a scorching hot erotic love story. So far, this series and the author are two for two on perfect reads for me, which makes me very eager to continue the series soon.

Note: This book contains explicit language and sexual situations including BDSM elements, voyeurism/exhibitionism, sex toys, and anal play, all of which could be objectionable to sensitive readers. Star Rating: *****

Covers can be deceiving... Normally I wouldn't have thought about reading this book because of the cover but I’m glad I did. I'm not in to hardcore BDSM and from the looks of this cover and the premise behind the book that is exactly what I thought it would be. However, I am in an awesome group that choose this book to read for our monthly challenge and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised... I loved both stories.

In the first story we meet an accountant who has stumbled upon a BDSM club by accident. Thrown into a world she doesn't understand, Jessica finds that she can't stop herself from enjoying her predicament. Between forming an attachment to the Master Z/owner and struggling against her self-control, Jessica can’t help falling in love with her new life style and lover!

In the second story, we are introduced to Kari a high school teacher who is ready to be dominated by her man. Unfortunately her man is an ass and while she is ready to take the plunge, she is not ready to let Duke be her Master. In comes Dan, a miserable widow who can’t seem to let his wife go and who finally finds a woman who can sooth all his old wounds (if he will let her). It’s a fight to the finish… will Kari or Dan win?

That's definitely an interesting way to get introduced to things XD

On the one hand, I liked the fact that Z was willing to give Jessica shelter. On the other, I feel like they could have arranged something else instead of just going straight to "sign the rules and then we'll warm you up". Granted (and this was noted in the Author's Note at the beginning), things were compressed so it wouldn't have worked as well if they'd waited, I still feel like there could have been something. I did like the fact that Z kind of picked up on Jessica so easily and was able to guide her to things. Granted, he probably wouldn't be an effective Dom if he couldn't but still. Going back to the rules thing, I feel like he did miss a massive issue with that, one that could have been a lot worse. I did kind of chuckle at Jessica's need to defend though, and laughed when Z told her to stop beating people. I also liked that Z kind of left returning up to Jessica but also did it in a way that let her know he wanted her to be there.
Dark Citadel 3.5 Stars!
I'll admit I didn't like this one as much as the previous one. It was close but Club Shadowlands was definitely my favorite of the two. I felt like this one focused too much on Kari's whole "no, this is bad, how can I want this?" instead of leaning into the relationship between her and Dan and Dan's whole idiocy. Yes, those things were shown, but I felt like Kari's thing came up a lot more (again, acknowledging that things were compressed to fit the length of the story, it still was a lot IMO). I did like that Kari finally called Dan out on his fears and that he finally acknowledged it, even though it took her leaving and a hit to the head to get that to come about. I did wish that Kari had been able to hit Buck; I wanted to punch him from the beginning because he was an ass, but I liked that she was able to get people to help when Buck lost his mind. I actually laughed out loud when Dan called Z and asked for Kari's address. Really glad I work from home and wasn't supposed to be on calls...

Read this ages ago......nearly a year, doesn't seem that long, and i remember most of the story, and the fact that certain parts are very steamy....i didn't rate it at the time b/c for me it's quite frivilous and fun BDSM club story and i like things to be a little darker (thats not to say that i enjoy stories of abuse just a greater intensity... a great story though, perfect for hthose of a more 'passive sub' nature....

Tremendously enjoyable DS romantic porn. I enjoyed it a great deal. It's a true shame those men aren't real.

This was my first time reading this paperback novel and listening to the audiobook at the same time. And it was interesting to see how the story was subtly changed in the different versions.

I believe that the audiobook is the more updated version compared to the paperback version. There is nothing horribly wrong with the paperback version. The audiobook version is more flushed out and sometimes depicts the main characters in a better light.

Overall I’d say 80-90% of the first novel (Club Shadowlands) is the same in both versions. And about 90% of the second novel (Dark Citadel) in this paperback book is the same in both versions.

I love the way Cherise writes! Amazing how she can describe even the smallest details. This is a very erotic series and she has done her homework on the life style.
This is a great introduction into the Shadowlands and getting to know a little about each Master. What woman wouldn't want to be a part of this club! Yummy!!!

Cherise Sinclair is an auto buy for me for every book she releases. I know I'm going to get a story that will take me through every emotion I have. This set contains the first 2 books in the series. It's a great place to start so you can see if you're interested in the rest of the series! If you like BDSM, drama, angst and some danger, pick these up and see what you think!

Meh, it was free on B&N. I mean for a free book it was awesome. But will I be purchasing the next in the series? no. There was not a lot of meat and potatoes and there definitely was no ending. But all in all not horrible. So if you can find it for free, I recommend :)

When it comes to contemporary erotica. This series is my first love. Spicy but not at the expense of plot or character development. Dominance and submission without being a dark romance.

Great book and a great series. Book one was okay but IMO I think all the other books in the series are so much better. I really enjoyed the series The series is about a BDSM sex club called Shadowlands and the Masters of the Shadowlands. The Masters are close friends and mostly spend time together at the club they do spend special times outside the club. It helps that as the series goes along we meet new characters, the subs of the Masters and they become close as well.

Each book highlights one of the Masters of the Shadowlands and their story. It was much better than I had expected. I loved the characters. The subs are fun, sexy and smart. The story lines are good and I liked that it had a great plot along with some really sizzling hot sex scenes. A lot of times I find there's too much of one or the other but in this case I thought it was just right. I thought it was a great book that had me interested from start to finish and left me wanting more. Wonderful intriguing plot, great character building, great characters and very well written.

BOOK 1-I really liked this 1st book introduction to shadowlands. It was very hot and sexy. Even with the main Dom was only interested in small parts of BDSM it was great reading how he showed that part of his world to a newbie. I would have liked more info about Master Z life outside the club but other that I really enjoy the book and interactions between characters.
BOOK 2-This 2nd shadowlands was great. Had all the hotter than hell sex. Sweaty bondage and drool worthy men. I got more background in this book then the 1st which I really liked. I loved the garden bit with Nolan. Not sure why, but it really made me laugh. Only problem I'v got now is I can't stop till all the Dom's have their HEA.

I had read one other book by Cherise Sinclair, but had forgotten how much I enjoyed it. This book contains two stories, both are fantastic, but I loved the 2nd one more than the 1st. Books like these are why I laugh at 50 Shades. I can't understand why people love that series so much when there are authors like Cherise Sinclair, Maya Banks, and Shayla Black writing books with the same subject matter, only a helluva lot better! I'll be starting book #3 tonight, and I really wish I didn't have to go to work tomorrow. I need to devour these books in one sitting, and it's a hassle when real life gets in the way of that. :P

A BDSM book that shows both proper consent and aftercare? No way.

Totally way. For that I would give this five stars. So five stars for proper care of sexual partners. Four stars for the sexy stories contained therein. Averages to 4.5 stars - but I'm giving it five because Goodreads is not down with the half star game (damn you Goodreads).

I will definitely be checking out more of these - already hunting the second one (which is actually the third book since "Masters of the Shadowlands" contains books 1 and 2 of the series).

I really enjoyed this story. I just wish it was longer. I was laughing my butt off at the heroine putting the smackdown at the club. Those Doms didn't know what hit them. Z was hot as hell and I loved the fact that he wasn't mesmerized by stick figure women and actually cared about Jessica's feelings and did whatever he could in his power to keep her comfortable while introducing her to the BDSM community. I want a Z for myself. I can't wait for the next in the series.

This is my first time reading Cherise Sinclair. And I have to say she has a new fan, right here!!! These first two books in the series are not only smoking HOT they are written well. The only negative I thing I can say is that I wish there were longer. There is just something absolutely delicious about a alpha dom! If this is your genre I strongly recommend picking these up! You won't be disappointed, promise.

This book along with My Liege are my all time favourite novels. Master of the shadow lands is the book I read after that 50 something. What a great way to be introduced to kink. Master Z and then Master Xavier. Who could ask for better. I have become addicted to all the Masters and their stories and not forgetting the Mountain Masters. Cherise is a master (or should that be mistresses) of her craft. Bravo!
