“Firefightersrs Help Us,” is a very basic introduction to a firefighter’s job. Spare text accompanies full-color photographs of diverse firefighters carrying out their duties. The very simple text is a good lead-in for pre-school or early elementary children who will be touring a fire station or meeting a firefighter, or as a springboard to discussion of this community helper’s job. The anonymity of the uniformed firefighters makes this volume a good choice for any community, since the firefighters could belong to any fire department. Beginning readers will be able to master this text (word count 73) with very little help.

The book would have been improved with the addition of a photograph of a firefighter with the face mask obscuring the firefighter’s face; one problem firefighters face is children who reject help in an emergency because the equipment looks frightening. Although not technically part of a firefighter’s tasks, Information about 9-1-1 calls might have been offered; firefighters are frequently first responders for 9-1-1 calls. A page showing a firefighter instructing a classroom of children to “stop-drop-and-roll” might also have been useful.

A brief index and several titles for additional reading are included, along with a table of contents. The author lists two web sites at the end of the book for readers interested in learning more about the topic. The first web site links to the story of Sparky, the fire dog (no dalmations are shown in any of the book’s photographs). The second web site links to the U.S. Fire Administration’s children’s page. It contains useful information about home fire safety, smoke alarms, and escaping from fire, as well as theme-related coloring pages, puzzles, and games. Information on becoming a Jr.Fire Marshal is included.
