Not sure if this is the case of an author who does better in long form than short of if Progeny was a one off, but these short stories just don't seem to be as compelling as much as the novel was. Neither did Silver Surrogate, another short story I read by the author. They are all well written and have some interesting and original ideas, but that certain something that takes the reading experience to the next level seems to be missing. Maybe it's the punch or the punch line or the fact that the ...more

WOW
A generous collection of short stories from the great Patrick C. Greene.
Each story certainly holds its own and occasionally you get that odd shudder that leaves the hairs on the back of your neck standing up.
The true to life observations of our own paranoia are clearly picked up here and he uses them to great effect; those little, middle of the night freaky moments become a hammer to put in the jolt of fear.
I have read Bills Becoming before as a stand alone short, and it still makes me smile

Recommends it for: people who are interested in sleeping well tonight
This is an excellent collection of shorts by Patrick Greene. It has all but one of my favorite stories of his (The Silver Surrogate) including a super creepy story about children that will make you sweat every time you pass a grade school.

As with all anthologies, this one had stories that really spoke to me, and some that spoke to me a little less. One thing that I found very consistent about this novel, was that the characters were very realistic. They really gave some depth to the stories. I found myself caring about the main characters, and that makes the read more interesting

Great Collection of short stories by Patrick C. Greene. Some previously published as well as some new stuff! Fate by Firelight was one of my favorites - but I've always been fascinated with ouija boards...

If you have been looking for an entry point into the works of Patrick Greene, this is a way to go. Great nuggets of horror and the bizarre.

Some dark serendipity plopped a young Patrick Greene in front of a series of ever stranger films-and experiences-in his formative years, leading to a unique viewpoint. His odd interests have led to pursuits in film acting, paranormal investigation, martial arts, quantum physics, bizarre folklore and eastern philosophy. These elements flavor his screenplays and fiction works, often leading to stran
