Invictus

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
 For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Somehow I found myself reading this collection of poems as the old year ended and a new one began. We've had this book on our shelves for many years and I've always looked past it, mostly because I was always confused by poetry before.

But for some reason this caught my eye late last night and I spent the last hours of 2020 reading these poems, finding many that resonated with so many of the feelings I've had through this difficult year. It brought me great comfort and peace.

Some of the poems are very popular works but there were so many I'd never heard of (not surprising given I am very new to the world of poetry) and I now have quite a list of poets to read through, which is the best part of reading a poetry collection.

Definitely holds up to the title: "Best Loved Poems to Read Again and Again." I'll probably be keeping this book close for the foreseeable future.

I don't like poetry, so I am not surprised that I did not enjoy this book.
The poems weren't bad, but I did not enjoy them.
