Als privé-detective Ricardo Cupido de opdracht krijgt om de moordenaar van de Madrileense schilderes Gloria te vinden, raakt hij volkomen in de ban van deze vrouw, die op iedereen een onuitwisbare indruk maakte. Het lijkt er aanvankelijk op dat de moordenaar een bekende moet zijn geweest, iemand die het niet kon verkroppen dat Gloria zo gesteld was op haar onafhankelijkheid. Maar deze veronderstelling vervalt als een tweede vrouw op precies dezelfde wijze wordt vermoord - in hetzelfde natuurgebied. Alles wijst er nu op dat een of andere gek aan het moorden is geslagen.

It's quite a compelling detective story not because of an especially intriguing mystery to be solved but mostly thanks to the brilliant portrayal of the characters.

De cómo se estructura la historia la pregunta que me surgió es: ¿Quién mejor que el compañero de la persona fallecida puede contratar a un investigador?
Por supuesto, por parte de esta muerte, el relato oculta un motivo sentimental y económico.

"There's a Numa in every forest, a fanatic guardian who has just one mission: to make sure that the wild woods stay wild."
Depths of the Forest (1999), my third book by Eugenio Fuentes, could easily be the best of the three, if not for the author's bizarre obsession that I ridicule later. It is the fourth entry in the Ricardo Cupido series, and the earliest one that has so far been translated into English. It is similar in structure, tone, and style to the later installments The Blood of the Angels and At Close Quarters .
The story takes place mainly in a fictional Spanish nature reserve and in the nearby town where Cupido lives. A talented painter and art gallery owner Gloria Garcia Carvajal is brutally murdered while walking in the forest: Gloria's boyfriend does not have confidence in the police force and hires Cupido to find the killer. The detective's investigation offers the reader an opportunity to meet quite a sizable set of suspects: Gloria's ex-lovers and admirers as well as her business partner. The most fascinating thread involves Doña Victoria, who used to be the owner of the lands on which the nature reserve was founded, and who has been involved in a protracted legal battle about the land ownership.
However, when another young woman is murdered in equally brutal way, it becomes apparent that a crazed serial killer is at large and that Gloria was not the particular target. From the whodunit point of view the plot is very interesting, and the book is for the most part compulsively readable. The denouement, a little in the Nero-Wolfean style, is a bit disappointing though.
I like the author's descriptions of nature: the forbidding forest with its ominous atmosphere comes alive on the pages and the mysterious cave paintings keep the reader in suspense. We are also offered a funny relief moment when Cupido recalls his youthful activities in the cave. Probably the best aspect of the novel is the characterization of Gloria - her portrayal is vivid, lively, and completely lifelike - I could imagine I have personally known Gloria despite the fact that she is only talked about and known from her own writings.
Brutal, cruel scenes have their place in literature, provided they make sense in the context. The killing of a stag is one of the most harrowing scenes I have encountered in quite some time: I recommend more sensitive readers skip the three page-fragment that begins with "They lowered the stag to the ground..." The brutality is justified in the plot, though, and it conveys a powerful message about people who use suffering of others, be it animals or other humans, to further any cause they are obsessed about.
Sexual references of even the rawest, most vulgar kind are also legitimate components of a literary work of art - again, as long as they are justified in the context - yet I have been stunned by the author's "sementics," his demented antics on the topic of semen of animal (three references) or human (another three mentions) origin. One of these references even uses the phrase "It was all so horribly gratuitous that I was nearly sick." Well, dear Mr. Fuentes, semen is not gratuitous, but your way of mentioning it certainly is.
Semen-free Depths would be a very good book, both as a detective novel and even perhaps as actual literature. With the gratuitous bits, I still recommend it, albeit with hesitation.

Per coloro che amano l'inchiesta il libro potrebbe essere interessante. L'argomento è contorto e banale: lei muore in una foresta. Chi meglio del compagno della persona deceduta può assumere un investigatore? [...] Naturalmente, da parte di questo decesso, la storia nasconde un motivo sentimentale ed economico.

Solo i rumori del bosco invadono quel silenzio sereno, statico, quasi irreale, che domina la riserva naturale di Breda, nell’Estremadura, in Spagna. Ma Gloria, una giovane artista che vi si è recata sola per raggiungere e dipingere alcuni angoli del bosco, si sente osservata. E fa bene, perché all’improvviso qualcuno l’assale e le taglia la gola. Pochi giorni dopo, un’altra ragazza, nello stesso posto, viene uccisa allo stesso modo.
Del caso viene incaricato l’ispettore Riccardo Cupido, il quale si scontrerà con la diffidenza e l’omertà di una serie di personaggi tutti possibili colpevoli, fino alla scoperta dell’amara verità.
Mi ha ricordato un po’ i gialli nordici, questo romanzo dello spagnolo Eugenio Fuentes, per l’attenzione sempre costantemente tenuta sul delitto, sulla trama gialla, senza dispersioni in chiacchere inutili, senza descrizioni prolisse, senza divagazioni; anche quel vago senso di inquietudine che accompagna l’ispettore Cupido, alla lunga mi ha ricordato quello che l’epico Wallander di Mankell non riesce proprio a scrollarsi di dosso.
E che dire dell’ambientazione, in una splendida riserva naturale che non fa che accrescere il mistero dell’assassinio, così crudelmente selvaggia, enigmatica, quasi inaccessibile?
Insomma, le premesse c’erano tutte. C’erano.
Perché allora tre stelline?
Perché il romanzo ha un solo ma grosso difetto: l’assenza di personalizzazione. Che, in un libro di questo genere, genere ormai tanto diffuso e inflazionato, diventa un difetto imperdonabile.
In pratica, non c’è cifra stilistica, non c’è carattere, non c’è impronta propria nelle azioni e nella psicologia die personaggi che sembrano davvero tutti uguali, misteriosi, ermetici, affascinati dalla vittima, potenziali colpevoli. Non c’è variazione, non c’è stile, è tutto un piano monocorde, col risultato che, a lungo, la narrazione diventa un po’ piatta e noiosa, per quanto incentrata sempre sul “delitto”: se si vuole parlare sempre di mistero, bisogna pur saperlo fare.
Più che sufficiente comunque per trama, ambientazione e scrittura mai banale, a tratti anche elaborata.

Ante todo, vaya por delante que no soy muy aficionada a la novela negra y/o policíaca. Ésta, que me ha venido recomendada en otro foro, es la primera que leo desde la trilogía de Millenium (que por cierto, sigo a medias con el último volumen, pudo conmigo).
Siempre me ha gustado la naturaleza, pero este escritor, hasta ahora desconocido para mí, me ha sorprendido agradablemente. Me ha parecido de lo mejor que he leído últimamente, muy por encima de otros libros del género que he intentado leer. Me he sentido como si caminara sobre la hojarasca, he escuchado el crujir de los arbustos y la brisa que se cuela entre las ramas de los árboles. El bosque era otro personaje más.
La trama es interesante, los personajes están bien retratados, y en ningún momento he sentido que la tensión decaía o que perdía interés. Con cada víctima he estado en tensión, me he sobresaltado y he sentido la muerte.
Me hacía falta desconectar, y este libro lo ha conseguido.

Estamos ante una novela policiaca de corte clásico.Asesinato de una mujer y posterior investigación del detective Ricardo Cupido. Dicho esto primero resaltar la poderosa prosa de Eugenio Fuentes. Los pasajes no protagonizados por Cupido son un autentico gozo narrativo.El bosque parece surgir de las páginas como un cuadro clásico de caza de esos que se ponen en los salones. Las descripciones se hacen plásticas y no estorban ni ralentizan sino k remarcan la importancia del entorno en lis estados de ánimo.
El relato está bien condtruido no decae en el ritmo y se resuelve de manera más q solvente. No inventa nada nuevo asi que el autor ha decidido coger los parámetros clásico y mimarlos. Muy recomendable.

Een beetje moeilijk om in te komen en voelde soms te veel als een info dump. Ene deel van het einde was voorspelbaar, andere deel niet dus dat was wel goed.

This readable and perfectly acceptable mystery from the forest of Spain did nothing wrong. The characters are interesting, the plot wrought as it should be, the setting eerie and full of bleeding deer and a creepy forest bumpkins and a bitter old woman who dominates her adopted son, who has herpes. Not bad. I had no problem finishing it, and the detective was alright as well. It had a sort of sad darkness to it, a cynicism with a bit of sexism-at least, I would know without looking at the author's name that it was written by a man. However, the ending was satisfying, the setting well established, the writing just fine. A better than average mystery, I just didn't fall in love. Like the characters, who are all painfully alienated, I felt kind of alienated after reading this. I don't know if it is because it was a so-so book, or if I picked up the mood and applied it to my understanding of the book....

Eugenio Fuentes is een van de Spaanse misdaadauteurs die in het buitenland succesvol is. Dit heeft hij vooral te danken aan Ricardo Cupido, een privédetective die in een aantal van zijn boeken het belangrijkste personage is. Hij is winnaar van diverse prijzen en De handen van de pianist is in 2008 verwerkt tot televisiefilm. Het woud is zijn eerste detective die in het Nederlands is verschenen. Voordat hij schrijver werd studeerde hij Spaanse literatuur en werkte hij als leraar.
De mooie schilderes Gloria García Carvajal wordt tijdens een wandeltocht door het bosrijke El Paternóster vermoord. Privédetective Ricardo Cupido krijgt van haar vriend, de advocaat Marcos Anglada, de opdracht haar moordenaar te vinden. Hij werkt samen met de Guardia Civil en vermoedt dat iemand uit haar nabijheid de moord heeft gepleegd. Als er vlak daarna opnieuw een vrouw op identieke wijze en in hetzelfde gebied wordt vermoord, gaat die theorie niet meer op. Cupido wordt van zijn opdracht ontheven, maar omdat hij de zaak toch wil oplossen gaat hij door met zijn onderzoek.
Fuentes begint het verhaal met een moord waarvan het lijkt alsof de lezer hier getuige van is of, en dat is in het ergste geval, alsof het jezelf overkomt. Dat toont aan dat hij deze misdaad levensecht weet te beschrijven. Een dergelijke beschrijving geldt overigens ook voor het hele verhaal, want de omgeving, die voor een groot deel bestaat uit fictieve plaatsen en gebieden, wordt dermate beeldend omschreven en beschreven dat de lezer zich in deze omgeving waant. Soms is het mysterieus, dan weer dreigend. Dat weet de auteur erg goed over te brengen.
Het woud is geen misdaadverhaal dat een zinderende spanning heeft, eigenlijk is die grotendeels zelfs afwezig. Het is vooral een recht toe recht aan verhaal waarin een aantal moorden opgelost moet worden. En de manier waarop, maar ook de setting, maken dat het boeiend is, het intrigeert. Dat heeft grotendeels te maken met privédetective Ricardo Cupido. Het is een interessant personage, wars van allerlei poespas en ook nog eens buitengewoon sympathiek. Het betekent niet dat de meeste andere personages ondersneeuwen, helemaal niet. De meeste van hen zijn karakteristiek en hebben hun eigen eigenaardigheden, dat maakt ze juist zo bijzonder.
In soms mooi geformuleerde zinnen weet Fuentes de lezer aan zich te binden. Zelfs zodanig, maar dat is eigenlijk altijd zo bij een whodunnit, dat je zelf ook probeert te achterhalen wie de moorden heeft gepleegd. Dat wordt door de auteur bemoeilijkt omdat hij gedurende de plot verschillende personages verdacht laat zijn. Toch krijg je wel een vermoeden wie de uiteindelijke dader is, maar Fuentes schijnt dat voorzien te hebben. Want het blijkt allemaal toch enigszins anders in elkaar te steken dan het aanvankelijk leek te zijn. Dat is dan overigens ook de enige echt grote verrassing die het verhaal kent.

En esta segunda entrega nos encontramos con un Cupido más formado académicamente y más solitario si cabe. “Experto” en amores e incapaz de compromisos salvo con su trabajo. Un argumento interesante pero que en algunas fases del libro se hace un poco monótono. El desenlace se adivina bastante pronto aunque no dejó de sorprenderme.
Espero poder seguir leyendo de las aventuras y desventuras de Ricardo Cupido, confiando en que no haya terminado un Máster entre este y el tercer libro, porque creo que en la vida no todo es tan fácil.

Tiene lo que tiene que tener una novela negra. Un caso (un asesinato) que se va complicando y una maraña de personajes que van desvelando secretos, y por tanto pistas, que teje el detective Cupido hasta su resolución. Nada más. Y nada menos.
Demasiado policial, no escarba el autor en la personalidad, pasado o presente del protagonista. Y es una pena porque mejoraría bastante el conjunto.

No pido más de una novela negra de este tipo. Un desenlace agridulce, típico del autor de esta novela. Y una trama llevadera,qué al menos en mi el autor me hace capaz de imaginarmela. Es realista en su escritura y no pido más. En una novela que intenta serlo. Cumple con su cometido.

El crimen y su resolución están muy bien y la prosa está cuidada, PERO por qué se le proyecta al personaje tanta perfección impostada, es supercansino el personaje femenino tan atractivo que todo el mundo desea. Enough.

Una historia narrada en tercera persona, para poder conocer a todos los personajes. 3 asesinatos que en apariencia no tienen relación entre si, unos sospechosos con unas coartadas perfectas, y todos con motivos para ver muerta a Gloria. Aparte de la historia principal, el autor nos recrea en unas descripciones muy bonitas de la zona de la reserva y su cultura. Leeré más aventuras del detective Cupido. Me gusto el libro y lo recomiendo.

Fuentes (Spain, 1958) is the award-winning author of short stories, essays and a series of popular novels featuring the private investigator Richard Cupido. In this installment, Cupido is hired by an attorney, the fiancée of an irresistibly attractive artist brutally murdered in the forest. The motive appears to be either money or passion. The suspects include her disgruntled uncle seeking inheritance and the preservation of tradition, an elderly woman trying to wrest the forest back from public hands, the adulterous art teacher obsessed with her, the sculptor who plagiarized her work, and perhaps even the poaching forest guard who always appeared to be watching. When a young hiker is killed the same way in the same clearing, authorities conclude that these are the acts of a random murderer, and the client cancels Cupido's contract. Fortunately for the reader, Cupido won't let the case rest and finds a clue that lets the murdered artist speak from the grave. The darkly elegant writing, the dimension afforded the characters, and the compelling, coherent plot lines compensate for the rapid and facile denouement that relies a bit too heavily upon a single discovery. Recommended for bookstores and libraries where fans of crime novels lurk.

Lo que disfruto mas disfruto cuando leo a Fuentes, es su prosa tan cuidada y elaborada pero sin que esta resulte ni excesiva ni pretenciosa...para muestra el siguiente párrafo:
"...¿Cuántos cadáveres ocultos se habrían enterrado en el bosque?, se preguntó, ¿cuántos productos de robos, cuántas armas, cuántos fetos, cuántas pruebas de cualquier delito? El bosque todo lo engulle y lo oculta, al bosque le gustan los cadáveres tanto como los odia el mar, que siempre termina devolviéndolos. Y quizá porque cada cierto tiempo exige su gabela de sangre, como un dios carnicero y antiguo, el bosque sigue conservando su soledad y su misterio. Una muerte de tiempo en tiempo es el tributo que hay que pagarle para que los niños puedan seguir soñando con él como el lugar donde se ocultan los monstruo".

Interesting to read a Spanish crime novel. The private investigator has a 'history' without giving you the sense of being a hopelessly flawed individual redeemed only by his skill in getting to the bottom of things I gather that only a couple of this series have been translated which is frustrating - as so often, the really interesting person is the investigator The book very much felt as though it was meant for Spanish consumption rather than written for export..

Atmospheric, philosophical, a great list of potential suspects and a rather attractive loner of a detective. I really liked this book, the stifling atmosphere of Breda, a small village where nothing is quite what it seems, the beauty of the forest, the contrast with Madrid. Beautiful prose, far more ornate than what we are used to seeing in Anglo-Saxon or Scandinavian crime fiction, yet I didn't feel it slowed down the action. Multiple points of view, which add depth and colour.

Private Investigator Ricardo Cupido investigates a brutual murder is a nature reserve. Modern crime story set in rural Spain. Very enjoyable read but found the description of the cruel torture and killing of the stag very disturbing.

Although the end isn't quite believable, Fuentes' description of a Spanish forest and his story telling through the different voices of the protagonists is great.
