A nice piece of historical fiction. Set in the Philippines during the Second World War, this story tells the tale of love between Jacob and Carla, as they navigate the horrors of war, in an attempt to assist Filipino fighters against their Japanese invaders. The author pays attention to detail, which is a must when delving into the world of historical fiction. Her research of the era is evident. There are more positives than negative here. Some "telling rather than showing" is one of the few ...more

The Unsurrendered by Joyce Shaughnessy is a novel about Jacob, an American secret agent, and Carla, a Filipina. The novel takes place in the Philippines during WWII. After the surrender to the Japanese they join forces with other Filipino-American guerrillas to wage a continued war against the occupying Japanese.

I did take pleasure in learning more about the time period and the war in the Philippines. However, I found the novel to be very simply written, almost to a fault. Very little time was

I won this book through Goodreads First Reads. I thank the author for sending it to me. When ever I win a book on First Reads, I always try to give it a fair review. I found the topic of this book to be one not well explored elsewhere. I signed up for the giveaway because my Dad had been a pilot in the South Pacific during WWII. When The Unsurrendered arrived I was very excited to read it. It has a very attractive cover. One of the first things that stood out to me was the extra large print. I ...more

I dont normally read books about WWII, but I gave this one a shot.
It is obvious from the first page of The Unsurrendered that the author feels passionate about the story she is about to tell. It focuses on Japans invasion of the Philippine Islands during WWII. There is no whitewashing the horrors that took place during this time in history as war is never civil. The author delicately weaves her characters Carla and Jacob around the actual events of WWII as they try to help save the Filipino

This extremely well researched novel nicely interweaves both fictional and factional characters. Set against a backdrop of actual events surrounding the Japanese invasion of the Philippine Islands during WWII, Joyce Shaughnessy doesnt flinch from describing the horrors that were inflicted during the occupation. The storyline follows the underground resistance on the Islands, the so called Unsurrendered," this was total war and no quarter was given. The mark of any novel is the ability of the ...more

First I want to say thank you as I have received this book through goodreads giveaways.
This book was a nice easy read about Clara and Jacob who fall in love and help try and save the Filipino fighters during world war II when the Philippine Islands get invaded by Japan. Then Jacob is captured by the Japanese which leaves Clara all alone. If you want to find out what happens to Clara and Jacob you will have to read this great book about world war II to find out.

I loved The Unsurrended! I've read all of her books and this one was by far her best work. The character development was good and I loved how it was suspenseful, heart breaking and heart warming all in one book! It brought to life elements of history I had never known and it was fun to learn it through her story. I can't wait for her next book (hoping she will write another one)!
