The definition of ideology continues to occupy scholars across a wide range of disciplines. In this book, Teun A van Dijk sketches a challenging new multidisciplinary framework for theorizing ideology. He defines ideology as the basis of the social representations of a group, its functions in terms of social relations between groups, and its reproduction as enacted by discourse. Contemporary racist discourse is examined to illustrate these ideological relations between cognition, society and discourse.
Teun Adrianus van Dijk, is a scholar in the fields of text linguistics, discourse analysis and Critical Discourse Analysis. With Walter Kintsch he contributed to the development of the psychology of text processing.
Not an easy read, but I highly recommend it. It will definitely change your perspectives. This is a must read; it help me a lot in my MA thesis, especially when there is a scarcity of literature concerning this respect.
I'm uh not super interested in cognitive approaches in linguistics except when it's being used to defend construction grammar, but I think van Dijk offers a really detailed dissection of ideologies and how they operate within society. It is very long though it took a while to get through. I guess read it if you need to quote it for your article.
