John Bates has worked as a state forest naturalist for the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. He is the owner of the naturalist guide service Trails North and he organizes outdoor classes for Nicolet College, the University of Wisconsin Extension, and for the North Lakeland Discovery Center. He is also a columnist for the Lakeland Times in Minocqua, Wisconsin.
What a lovely book - a soothing balm following the 2020 election and dark days of Covid-19. "Graced by the Seasons" is a nice alternative to poetry, which I don't care for. Bates's knowledge of northern Wisconsin natural history and ecology is impressive! I'm a retired natural resources professional and was surprised at how much about the state's natural history I didn't already know. I found the author's gentle, droll writing style charming, and will definitely read "part 2" - Fall and Winter.
