I thoroughly enjoyed my time back in the White House kitchen, after a lengthy time away, reading many of Hyzy's other books, both recent and from an apparent era past. The series picks up where it left off and progresses nicely, with compact chapters filled with information. This is, probably, my favourite of Hyzy's two modern series, though neither can compare to the Alex St. James books. The focus is less on the White House in this story, than on its Head Chef and her personal issues with rela ...more

This series stared out fairly strong - some good things, some bad things, but more good than bad, with interesting characters and solid plots. But the last three books, and this book in particular - outstanding! This story builds a bit slowly, but there's a lot of character development - not only on the part of Ollie and Gav, but in a few of the secondary characters as well and I found that kept the story moving along really well. I love the relationship building between Ollie and Josh and I'm n ...more

This is exactly what I want in a book; a good mystery, likeable characters, and suspense. This book was simply astounding, I can see myself re-reading it over and over again.

The characters experienced so much growth in this book it wasn't even funny Olivia, an amazing character to begin with began to take Gav more seriously. Gav, who I'd thought of as elusive, began becoming real to me, and Sergeant became tangible.

The mystery was about the best part of this book, however, because it kept me gue

The newest entry in the White House chef series may well be it's best. Unlike many writers of series books, Julie manages to keep the stories fresh and new and not just cookie-cutter the story. Of course, Ollie gets into a jam and of course she gets rescued, but this book provides some background into Ollie's life and her deceased father. She is on a quest to find out what happened for him to be dishonorably discharged and accused of corporate spying and gets into quite a quagmire of secrets, al ...more

I'm beginning to believe that the White House Chef mysteries are my favorite cozy mysteries ... even with a youngish (!!!!) sleuth. Olivia Paras has always believed her father was an honorable man, but she had some questions about the circumstances of his death. Ollie gets her answers in Fonduing Fathers. Enjoyable. Hard to put down (I read it in one day). Lots of multi-layered characters. Fun. Serious. Heart warming. Recipes. Four enthusiastic thumbs up!

Loved that this book's focus was on Ollie's personal life, although I missed the White House and her staff a bit as they took a backseat role. And the mystery came to a most satisfying conclusion that still left me eager for the next installment.

Love the character and as expected, this episode was thoughtful and exciting. As a series character, Ollie Paras stands a cut above the crowd. Looking forward to #7!

Perfect example of why this series is so much fun. I really liked getting to know a little more about Ollie's family and seeing her stand up for herself so much more pointedly in this one.

Enjoyable read, but hope the next few books will be better. The primary focus was on the main characters continuing relationship plus a mystery about the death of her father. The mystery is never very interesting. It is clear why the main character is invested in the mystery, but as a reader I never felt interested. Similar to the previous book the mystery does not get solved by the main character, which should be the point of a mystery novel. I do continue to be interested to see how the story ...more

This book has everything: intrigue, conspiracy, family secrets, exciting action...and lots of good food. I found this book in a Little Free Library, so this is the first one of the White House Chef mysteries I've read. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would, and I'll be seeking out the rest.

This was the best of the series so far. I know that s cozy mystery is supposed to be about the mystery but I preferred this one over the previous ones because it gave us so much more insight into the characters and their development. We spent more time with the families of Ollie and Gav, and with that time learned more about Gav's motivations and Ollie's family history. I prefer the white house moving into the background instead of being center stage. The only thing that does not sit well with m ...more

Fonduing Fathers is the sixth book in the A White House Chef series by Anthony Award wining author, Julie Hyzy. I think Fonduing Fathers is the best one yet.

Hyzy has written this book to center around the murder of Ollie's father, some 20 years earlier and his supposed Dishonorable Discharge from the Army. Information her mother has never shared with anyone, ever. Ollie and Gav have taken a vacation to visit her mother and Nana. Her mother realizes that it is time to finally share with Ollie, wh

Ah the delight of a good cozy. Following a long workweek I cracked open this installment in the life of White House chef Olivia Paras and spent the evening and early morning enjoying it.

This book takes Olivia into an investigation involving her own father. That is a change and bit of a break from her constantly being nattered at by someone @ the White House who feels she is poking her nose in where it does not belong. This is a popular plot twist in all cozies but with the stakes being so high

When the book opens, Ollie is visiting her mom and grandma in Chicago. She is determined to find out more about her father, but the news she receives only confuses and frustrates her. On her return to DC, she sets out to learn more (such as how her father could have been buried in Arlington if he was dishonorably discharged) - but she gets shut down or warned away at every turn.

Meanwhile, Josh (the younger of the First Kids) has developed an interest in cooking, so Ollie is working with him whe

#6 in the White House Chef mysteries. As usual the White House background, interaction with the kitchen staff and the First Family, and White House politics (gasp!) provide the interest in this series. This time around, the mystery element is provided by Ollie delving into the 25 year old mystery of her father's murder. Hyzy is better suited to the light touch employed for the recurring aspets of this cozy series. She seems unsteady when delving into the world of secret agents and undercover ope ...more

Upon initial start of reading this book, I was kind of unsure at the shift in the story going from the goings on at the White House and how Ollie stumbles into trouble.

As a means of switching gears, this time Ollie ends up determined to find out what happened to her long dead father. This comes after her mother reveals the truth as she knows it to Ollie after telling her a fiction for many years.

Invariably, it does end up tying back to the White House but in some unexpected ways.

This is best book so far in the White House Chef Mystery series. The characters were more fully rounded and the detail and story line lush. White House Chef, Ollie Paras visits her mother and grandmother with her boyfriend, special agent, Leonard Gavin, fondly known as Gav. There, Ollie is told the circumstances of her father's death that happened when she was a very small child. His murder, still unsolved, his dishonorable military discharge and his grave at Arlington does not make sense. You ...more
