Gabe and Seth used to play make-believe games in the woods behind Seth's family farm. It was the perfect creepy landscape for imagining they were up against beasts and monsters and villains.
Just as Gabe's decided he's outgrown their childish games, though, it appears that their most monstrous creation could be real.
Is there a ghoulish man-eating creature prowling the woods for victims? Or is Seth just determined to make Gabe think so -- no matter who gets hurt in the process?
Gabe's not sure which answer would prove more unsettling, but he's determined to learn the truth.
Author of The Stone Child, The Nightmarys, The Ghost of Graylock, and the Mysterious Four series,The Haunting of Gabriel Ashe, and The Book of Bad Things.
This was a book that was better than I expected. It gave me chills. I never knew what the cover was until I read into part 3. The book was boring at parts, but entertaining at others. I am starting to go into a horror/thriller faze, and this book was a great thriller. I wish there was a movie to this. Super details. Gave me chills. Recommend this to anyone who likes thrillers/horrors.
by: shawn. The Haunting Of Gabriel Ashe Dan Poblocki This book is a horror fantasy book.
In the beginning of this book a 13 year old kid by the name of Gabriel Ashe. He was required to move in with his grandmother, who was a famous book illustrator, to a small town north of Boston with his parents due to their previous house being burnt down. Gabriel’s father is a puppeteer and his mother is just a work at home mom. When Gabriel first moved to this new town he had no friends. Near the middle of summer Gabriel met Seth who told Gabriel about a baby eating beast named the hunter. Throughout the summer Gabriel and Seth play a fantasy role-playing game that they had made up. They continue playing this game until summer ends. When school starts back again Gabriel becomes friends with Mazzy Lerman who invites him to her friend Felicia’s pool party where the first of many weird things began. After everyone had come back out from going inside to eat, everyones towels had been thrown into the pool and no one had any idea as to who had done it. After that weekend and everyone had gone back to school Felicia invited Gabriel to sit at her table and because she was popular he expected her to be teasing him or something else. That evening, Mazzy, Felicia and two of Felicia’s friends had gone to Gabriel’s house to watch a movie. While watching the movie they heard a strange noise and when they got up to investigate when they looked down the hall there were glowing red eyes staring back at them. Once they had moved closer to the hallway they could see that the source of the glowing red eyes were, in fact not an animal as they had thoughts eyes but one of Gabriel’s father’s own puppets. When Gabriel went to take a closer look the puppet simply collapsed limply onto the floor. Gabriel, Mazzy, Felicia, and Felicia’s two friends at first believed that either seth or Gabriel’s father was playing tricks on them but Gabriel’s father was asleep and seth was at home. After everyone had left Gabriel picked up the puppet and took it back to his father’s workshop where it belonged. The next morning Gabriel’s father asked Gabriel if he had seen the puppet and Gabriel said ”it should be in your study where it always is.” His father then said “its not.” Gabriel then proceeded to say “it couldn’t have simply grown legs and walked off, could it?” Gabriel’s father then said “I wouldn’t think so.” Gabriel then said “could it be at Seth’s house.” after this him and his father went to seths house to search for the puppet. While searching they decided to go out to the barn and found someone who was long since deads bedroom with the puppet that had disappeared, Mason Arngrim. Mason was someone whose past was similar to Gabriel and Seths present. Mason, when he was in high school whether by fate or by destiny Gabriels grandmother became his friend over a period of time. little did Gabriels grandmother know at the time but mason had thought of a creature much like the hunter of Gabriel and Seths game. Little did mason know a chicken had been brutally killed in his bedroom in a barn so his adopted mother blamed him for it. Afterwards Mason ran away into the woods and fell into a well. After being down in the well for many hours, Masons adopted came along and stumbled upon the well that Mason had fallen into. When mason cried for help his adopted mother to help him, she did the exact opposite, she dropped a large rock on top of him, killing him quickly. One day when Gabriel had been at school on halloween there was a halloween dance/party going on at school. Gabriel, Seth, Mazzy, and Felicia decided to investigate around the inside of the school to see if they could find out the source of what had been happening to them. Little did they know the hunter was going to pay them a visit while they were in the school. After having been walking around they stumbled upon the pool area and in the pool they saw a large black object suspended underwater. When Mazzy went to try figuring out what it was a large shadow suddenly formed and attacked her sending her and the shadow stumbling into the pool. Gabriel then jumped in to help mazzy fend off whatever it was that attacked her but it had already run away. They then began searching for a way out but kept running into barrier things that kept causing them to stop and every time they stopped the shadow figure got closer and closer. After they had escaped the school Gabriels grandmother told him that his little sister had disappeared, Gabriel then remembered the story of the hunter and how he would abduct children to eat them then return the bones to taunt the parents. Seth asked Gabriels grandmother if he could drop her off at his house and she agreed. When they got to seths house there was smoke coming from what seemed to be the house but they drove around to the back of the house and saw that the barn behind the house was on fire Gabriel got out of the car to look at the barn and heard a faint screaming/crying. Realizing it was his sister that was screaming, without thinking he ran into the barn climbed to the upper floor and rescued her from masons old bed. Afterwards Gabriel’s parents were calling him a retard and a hero for running into a burning barn to rescue his sister. The next day when Gabriel and seth met up they both agreed they had to find where Mason’s body was and give it a proper burial in order to lay his spirit to rest. Later that day the two boys went to the rock mound and began to move each rock away and found the well. Seth said he was going to climb in, but when he did the large shadow came up and shoved seth to the bottom of the well. Next Gabriel was shoved into the well. After having been unconscious for an unknown period of time the hunter looks down the well and asks seth if he wants to join him in the game forever. Gabriel attempts to talk seth out of it but seth still agrees because Seth’s brothers body was found down in the well along with mason’s body. When the hunter/Mason begins pushing a rock on top of the well in order to drop it on top of Seth, Gabriel yells stop but the hunter just continues. When the rock began to fall Gabriel threw himself over seth in order to protect him. After an unknown period of time passes Gabriel’s funeral is held, as well as David, Seth’s brothers funeral. The city agrees to bury Mason in a cemetery to lay him to rest. Overall I believe that this is a very well and thoroughly thought out book that has many crazy plot twists and has a very easy to follow story line
This book didn't get a full five stars due to the fact that the plot took so long to roll out. I enjoyed reading it, although the characters life stories felt shallow and had a overall basic tone to it. What i mean by that is that I have seen so many books play out like this one, it felt more basic than a Scooby Doo episode( same plot every time, they always unmask the culprit, same "if it wasn't for you meddling kids" quote). Other than that, there was a couple good plot twists, which is why im giving it 3 stars.
This book was good. I enjoyed reading. At first, it was a bit slow and confusing, but it got better and more exciting throughout the book. I loved the ending. I don´t want to spoil it so I won´t. Which is why, if you want to find out, then you will have to read it for yourself!
I read this book for my English class for something we call SSR (Sustained Silent Reading). We read a different book every quarter and then have to do a review for it on here for one of the grades. I really enjoyed this book. The plot was very well thought out and had LOTS of twists and turns that were very unexpected! It always kept me on the edge of my seat. Although the plot at times seemed like it was slow to progress throughout, it still kept your attention through some of the plot changes. The summary of the book does a good job at laying down the initial plot but as you read the book, you will realize how much more in-depth it actually is! I think the characters were well developed and interesting, especially the character Seth Hopper. At first he seems like a normal 8th grade kid, but then the main character, Gabriel Ashe, finds out that he is a little off his rockers and not very well liked. But what is really interesting about Seth Hopper is his family and ancestors. His family is a big mystery and plays a huge role in the story. Just from the title of the book you can guess that it will basically be a ghost story, but once you start reading it, it seems like a normal book and then takes lots of unexpected turns and the plot completely changes. While in my opinion the book does have a rather unnecessary and disappointing end, I would definitely recommend this book!
i think that this book was really good. this book was about a boy named gabe who moved into a new town and had no freinds. he moved there because his old house had a fire in his dads office and burned it all down. Gabe is sortof happy that they did because gabe was always being teased by his classmates because his dad makes puppets for a job. he soon had a friend named seth and he told him that a hunter is going to get him and that is what the rest of the book ends up with the hunter getting them all.one quote was "my brother ran away before we could finish the game" this quote is important becuase Gabe is playing a made up game about monsters and things but bad things are happening. Seth's brother disappeared before thee end oft the game so Seth wanted to finish with a new person. another important quote was "this is the same monster that we have been playing with in our game. its called the hunter" this is an important quote because it is making Gabe and Seth aware that the monster in the book doing all trouble is the same one that they have been joking around with. this just showed them that the monster is actually real and could be out to get them.
The Haunting of Gabriel Ashe is a spooky story about a boy named Gabriel Ashe who is being haunted by a long dead ghost named Mason Ingram who wants to play a game. The story starts off with Gabe and his friend Seth out in the woods playing an imaginary game where there there is a beast stealing children. But after awhile the game isn't a game anymore and the angry spirit as after Gabe and Seth. As this story progresses friendship is be lost, a child stolen, and the death of a friend who saved many more lives in the future. I liked this book because there were cliffhangers everywhere, and I recommend this book to people who like mystery and horror books.
The story: Gabe thinks his adventures with Seth in the woods behind his house are just a game. Little does he know that the evil Hunter is more than just an imaginary enemy. Now both boys are running to keep just a step ahead of this monster from the past, trying to keep themselves, their families, and even their town safe. But the Hunter has more tricks up his sleeve that they ever imagined...
June Cleaver's ratings: Language PG; Violence PG-13; Sexual content G; Nudity G; substance abuse G; magic and the occult PG-13; GLBT content G; adult themes (death of the main character!) PG-13; overall rating PG-13.
Liz's comments (with spoiler): Poblocki does a good job of ratcheting up the suspense a bit at a time as the kids work to solve the mystery of the Hunter: who he is, and how to fight him. Ain't gonna lie, though--killing off the main character is a pretty extreme move for MS fiction, even if the kid is willing to die to protect his friend.
Annotation with spoilers: Gabe's family's house burned down earlier this year, so they're staying the summer with his grandmother, Elyse, until they find another place to live. Before starting at his new school, Gabe has made friends with Seth, who lives at the bottom of the big hill where Grandma's mansion-like house is situated. They play a fantasy game in the woods, with Seth as Wraithen of Howler's Notch, and Gabe as "Meatpie" of Castle Chicken Guts. Small weird things happen as they play, but not enough that Gabe starts connecting the dots just yet.
The boys find an old pile of rocks, haped something like an altar, that they decide is the Hunter's fort, and they get ready to dismantle it. But just as the top rock goes flying, Gabe very clearly hears a voice saying "DON'T!" very urgently--enough that it freaks him out and he stops. But Seth uses an old M80 grenade and blows the thing up. Near the same time, Seth confides in him that his older brother, David, used to play this game with him, but that about three years ago, David disappeared after a big fight with their mother, and has never been seen again. Next time the boys go out to the altar tree, the pile of stones has been reassembled.
Upon starting school, Gabe is suprised to find that (unlike at his old school) he's not a dork or an outcast. People are willing to befriend him and let him sit with them at lunch...but it becomes apparent very soon that Seth is a social outcast, the one who for whatever reason has been chosen by the rest of the school to be lowest kid in the pecking order. Even though he's had fun with Seth over the summer, Gabe starts distancing himself from Seth, just to enjoy the feeling of not being the picked-on kid for a change (even though he knows this is wrong and unfair). Seth first tries to sit with the group at lunch and, being told he's not welcome, pours chocolate milk on one girl's head and gets suspended. When he comes to Gabe's house to apologize, Gabe says he's not going to play the game anymore, and that he doesn't want to hang out with Seth. Seth, angry, threatens that "The Hunter will come for you." Gabe shuts the door.
One reason that Gabe was made fun of at his old school is that his father is a puppet maker in the Jim Henson tradition, and the kids all called him Puppet Boy. When his parents go out for the evening, his new friends come over to the house (an old mansion, really) and end up asking for a tour. Gabe purposely doesn't take them into his father's studio, where his newest creation, amna-sized puppet named "Milton Monster" is hanging. The kids are freaked out by a growling sound in the hall, and next thing you know, Milton Monster seems to have come to life in a very unfriendly way. It falls to the ground when they confront it, but it was pretty freaky; and the next morning, Milton Monster is gone. When Gabe's dad forces him to go with him to confront Seth about it, the other boy denies any involvement.
In the meantime, a dark shadow starts to be seen around the town. Gabe feels it watching him; other people have reported it too, and he even thinks his grandmother has seen it, although she's unwilling to discuss it. Even the science class's pet rat has disappeared...only to reappear days later as a pile of bleached bones. Gabe's friend Mazzy goes out to see Seth and get his take on the happenings around the town; although sullen, Seth insists he has nothing to do with them.
In the meantime, Gabe's grandmother finally tells him about her friendship, 50 years ago, with a young man named Mason Arngrim who lived with his evil aunt, Verna Hopper (this turns out to be Seth's great-grandmother). He was unwanted in the home, and grandma Elyse, then a teen herself, befriends him, but after Mason's aunt burns his stories, and Elyse's accompanying illustrations,
On Halloween, the school bake sale is disrupted by an M80 explosion that blows up a chocolate cake and sends people reeling. Then, during that night's haunted house event, the shadow comes out of hiding and chases them around. One of Gabe's friends ends up in the school pool and nearly drowns; when Gabe gets home, he hears from his grandmother that his little sister, toddler Miri, has disappeared (his parents are out). Gabe, deathly afraid that the shadow has kidnapped her, runs down to Seth's house to see if the other boy has seen anything. And when he gets there, he makes the terrible discovery that Seth's barn is on fire, and hears the wails of his little sister coming from inside. He runs in and saves her, barely getting both of them out in time.
Since it's Halloween, and the worst day of the year for spirits manifesting themselves in the real world, he and Seth realize that the Hunter isn't done for the night. They also realize that the "altar" they'd semi-destroyed earlier in the fall is the place from which the shadow emanates--so they leave everyone else to fight the fire and make their way through the dark woods. Disturbing the stones of the altar, Seth falls down into what appears to be a well; in trying to rescue him, Gabe also falls down. Injured, he enters a sort of in-between state (between life and death) where he comes into contact with Seth's older brother David, who fell down this same well to his death several years ago. The mystery has never been solved until now. David tells Gab his story, and tells him that he must keep refusing the Hunter's offers to join him so they can continue playing the game forever--because if he agrees, he'll be dead.
When Gabe awakens the next morning, he explains what's happened to Seth--so when the Hunter shows up and makes his offer, Gabe is surprised and horrified when Seth chooses to continue in the game so he can see his brother again. When the Hunter drops a huge rock down the well with the intent of killing Seth, Gabe plunges over to save his friend--and in doing so, is killed himself.
The story concludes with the townsfolk rescuing Seth, bringing up Gabe's body, and finding and burying the bones of both David and Mason (the Hunter), which assures that their spirits will now cease to roam the earth. Seth has a difficult time dealing with his guilt, until he goes to visit Gabe's Grandma, who advises him to simply be thankful for the gift Gabe gave him. Adding her advice to his new reality that he's no longer the social pariah he once was, thanks to Gabe's friend Mazzy, Seth realizes that he can in fact be thankful, and go on to live his life.
"Don't worry. Now, we'll have all the time in the world for our game. You'll be the good guy. I'll be the bad." Where do I even begin with how much I loved this. I loved each character, even Seth which many may not like. I loved the whole jumping through reality and imagination. I freaking loved the plot. The mystery was quite literary unsolvable until near the end. It had everything that I am trash for. Halloween mystery, no romance, because they're too young, and characters that you just can't help but fall in love with. Story like this also always have this atmosphere that's hard to describe. It's like sitting home alone with all the lights out besides a candle. Just sitting there. For some reason, I love that feeling. Spoilers That ending was amazing! I won't start with that though, I'll work my way through the story. Most of the beginning and middle, are what most people would conceited boring. I think that's were most people would have DNF'ed it, but I didn't even think about it. It seemed to be setting the story up, building to the amazing ending. It was so good though! Just giving you the tiniest spinet of the mystery, but most definitely not enough to solve it. Just enough to keep you wanting more. I have to say the thing I liked the least, which I still enjoyed, but just slightly displeased me, was the info dump of the back story. If it was just being told through Elyse, his grandmother, it would have been so much work. But because we went back into her point of view in the past, made it enjoyable. The only thing I could say to make it better, was to have story scattered through the whole book. The ending thought. It all happened in around 80 pages, which made it even better. If it was just around 20 pages, I would have through it was okay, but because it stretch for so long and it didn't seem like the story was stretching just to make it longer, it was doing it because it needed that space. The pool was to introduce Mason and show that everything was real, and not just a theory, the burning down barn, which may have seemed pointless, but the rock lead them to the well and shows Gabe that David really is dead. Overall, this story was just so dark and beautiful.
Gabriel Ashe is the reason I like the haunting of Gabriel Ashe, by (author) Dan Poblocki. This book is very thrilling and will appeal to most action lovers.
The haunting of Gabriel Ashe is a book where action thrives, from imaginary fights against monsters and 2 boys, to a group of friends fighting for their lives against a clever fiend.
This book will leave you wondering about many things, some questions are answered but others are not. Pros and cons about the book, pros: remarkably interesting story and plot, deep characters, and amazing character development, the setting is explained in a way where you feel like you are there and are running along with the friends trying to stop the very real monster.
Cons: some things are left unanswered and are a little confusing, and we got left on a cliff hanger at the end, another con is the plot took a while to get laid out and the character's lives felt a little basic and bland, the final con is they did not make a movie, which they really should.
So, if you like action, thrillers, and horrors, then you will love The Haunting of Gabriel Ashe. So, the next time you want to read a good thriller book, check it out! You won't regret it.
Would you freak out of a ghost from a game you played actually came to life? I would run screaming, but in The Haunting Of Gabriel Ashe. Written by Dan Poblocki, this book is an amazing thriller that surprises you with every page you turn. It may have been a little slow in the middle, but there are many other parts that make up for it. An example is when Gabriel's friend tells him, " The Hunter will come for you... you and your new friends." Then weird things start happening and Gabe decides that he," just doesn't want to play games with him anymore. With anyone." Like I said, in the middle of the book it may have been a little slow, but the end was so dramatic and unlike every book I've read that I ended up crying. I can't wait to read some other book by him, including The Stone Child and Nightmarys. If they are even a little bit like The Haunting Of Gabriel Ashe then I would be excited to read them. This book ended up being a 2015 Lone Star book that I would recommend to middle school students, boy or girl, who wants some paranormal scares and excitement.
I read the book “The haunting of Gabriel Ashe”, by Dan Poblocki This was a good book but when I read the book I thought it would be more scary but it did have mystery. In the story Gabe’s house got burned down by a fire, him and his family had moved into his grandmother's mansion in the woods. Gabe quickly makes many new friends at his school, Gabe’s new friend Seth and him play a fantasy game behind there two houses. After playing the game for a while Seth starts to get possessive of Gabe and their friendship. Gabe and his friends start playing pranks on Seth’s friends, but some of the pranks seem to get extreme that Gabe could not do. The genre of this book is fantasy. The conflict of the story is when the pranks start getting serious and Gabe and his friends realized some of the pranks have gone too far. I would recommend this book for a ready for age 9 plus just because the words are a little large. Also I feel like it’s a really good mystery book and anyone would like to read it.
This book does good job at confusing the reader of what is actually going on and on who the ghost is that is terrorising them which made it interesting to find out what was causing the events that are happening in this small town and was able to connect the other books made by the author in the world of Gabriel Ashe. I believe the book could have been better if instead of having Gabriel give his life to save his friend. I believe this would have been better because it would show more into how everyone reacted about what happened and see who exactly is hiding from the truth. It would also prevent the author from giving us background into a characters past about a funeral they did not remember. But nothing is perfect, overall the book was interesting and is worth reading to those who would like to read it.

I read this book when I was about 12 and am now a grown adult. It's been my favourite ever since. The reason for my love of this book and why it never leaves my mind is the very ending. Dan Poblocki ends this book in a way that most authors who write for children wouldn't. He kills his main character and he does in a way that gives the readers hope only to go "Did you forget that this is horror? The ending isn't happy." but it's a great one! The ending is also bittersweet in that Seth talks to Gabe's grandma and tries to better his life because of the sacrifice that is made by Gabe. Not everyone is a fan of endings that kill the main character I thought it was brave play that I haven't seen before in a book written for kids. If you're a parent however and not a person who is reminiscing on their favourite book as a kid then do please make a judgement call on if your kid would like the ending as much as I did. Some kids will love it some may be terribly upset. I was a big fan of it.

I just can’t give this book a bad review, it was my favorite novel in middle school and I reread and annotated it this year as a Christmas present to my best friend who was also a huge Dan Poblocki fan when she was younger.
These books do an amazing job at reaching their target audience and scaring them out of their minds, and since that’s what these were written for, it’s just not fair to judge them from a more mature and grown mindset. I also think this book does a good job at studying interpersonal relationships at the middle school age and discussing how everyone has issues below the surface and all people are insecure about something. I really enjoyed rereading it and letting my younger self know that I remember her and I’m so proud of her.
Ville virkelig gerne have haft en lykkeligere slutning dog, så derfor "kun" 4 stjerner 😔❤
Just finished read: The Haunting of Gabriel Ashe. I like to read the books before I put them into my classroom library.
Gabe recently moved into his grandmother's house after a house fire. His new friend Seth, who lives just down the hill, introduces him to a new game. A game that becomes all too real within only a short time.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ (3.5/5 Stars) I liked the storyline however I felt that some of the words were a little too advanced for a 5th grade reading level. All the same, I will put it into my classroom library. I love the spooky feel to it.
I've read his books before a long time ago in middle school and remember loving the horror and creepiness of them. This book didn't disappoint and I was shocked where they took the ending. I loved all the creepy, spooky and death of the book. I think the playing of the actual game threw me off when reading when starting the book in my opinion. It wasn't bad but it just didn't click with me and it wasn't until later where the game is more explained and actually matters for a reason for the plot, that I found it uninteresting until it was revealed to have a point.
Its a good book! Its an easy read and its a good book to read when you want to get another book out of your mind. Though it can give you creeps if you read at night, I can assure you that. It has a good story it could have been developed a bit more and maybe by addimg other details it might have been a bit more interesting. But over all its a good book and I recomend it to anyone who is looking for something a bit more light to read.
At times this was a bit slow. I wasn't as invested in the characters as maybe I was intended to be. More than once I put it down, but overall there really wasn't anything bad about it. A fairly dark little tale with some real-world commentary on bullying and abuse. I think more than anything the ending surprised me... Otherwise, I might have given it an "okay" rating. I'm not sure I liked the ending, but it did catch me off guard. So kudos for that.
The book the haunting of Gabriel ash is a spectacular book. It’s filled with thrills and chills of random objects appearing in the forest! A dangerous spector wants to play a game with Gabriel and his friend seth which are victims of the ghost! The ghost plays the role of a giant baby eating mutant tracking down the friends, he can also take the form of a shadow or a dog (almost anything). Gabe and seth must kill the monster.

I've read this book about every year for my birthday for the past couple years (this was the first time I read it and actually finished it all the way (while comprehending it, haha)). This book was very interesting to read and made me keep wanting happiness for the characters. It made me very emotional yet overall, was outstanding. I think I'll read this every Halloween too!
What on earth was that ending? I was not prepared but I really enjoyed it as this is a book for kids and to have such a meaningful and serious ending like this took me by surprise but also was something that I think is important to read when you are younger.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It is a YA, I believe, so it is for a younger crowd. However, it was definitely creepy and had some scary elements to it! Great story and characters. Also surprised by the ending.
