Void & Sky... The characters in Mr. Hemmings' latest hybrid collection of prose and poetry are caught between dreaming and losing, between remembering and trying to get back what slipped away. Often employing the prose poem or the micro fiction, and in some cases, the short story format, Hemmings attempts to pry into the rich inner lives of his heroes and anti-heroes. Free-falling into this life, his characters have no choice but to dream, choose, and follow street signs that may prove illusory. Landing safely on ground is never guaranteed. Reaching out may result in a loss of hands. Hemmings often uses collage and juxtaposition-- the daydream and the trance-like utterance--to build a rich mosaic that makes us who we are. His characters are fallible but always ready to rebuild with the help of language and a belief in their own magic.
