First Conan Doyle I've read, and really enjoyed getting to know the characters "first hand", having experienced them through the filters of film and TV in recent years. Great detective, easy reading. Really enjoyed.

I’d never even considered reading Sherlock Holmes before, but acquired this collection in a sort of Christmas literary bingo in a pub in south London. And I’m so pleased I did - it was such an enjoyable read. Each story is engaging, beautifully crafted, and dripping with Victorian marginalia. You can’t help but realise, however, that Holmes is actually a bit of a tw@t. Ever so clever, but doesn’t he just know it? Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855.
