If you have struggled personally against the powerful draw of pornography, or if you have ever tried to help someone fighting this battle, you know how hard it is to break free. But real freedom isn’t found by trying harder to change. Nor is it found in a particular method or program. Only Jesus Christ has the power to free people from the enslaving power of pornography.

Pastoral ministry is filled with unique challenges. One challenge that is growing exponentially, is the sin of pornography. Pastors must deal with this issue directly - with grace and biblical authority.

I tend to pass on most books that address the topic of pornography these days. The reason: Many Christian books miss the target all-together. They either focus on addiction, make excuses for men trapped in the sin of pornography, minimize the sin, or offer graphically explicit "help" that does mo

Quite simply, this is the best book on freedom from addiction to pornography that I have read (and I have read my fair share of books of this type over the years). The depth and thoroughness to which Heath Lambert goes to strike at the root causes of pornography addiction, and how God equips each of us to fight this addiction, was so refreshing and Christ-centered that I found myself driven to a deeper love for God and His Word through what I was reading from Lambert. If you have read any other ...more

Great resource for men in their call to live in purity. Very helpful. Lambert is both practical and theological. Both are necessary in the fight for purity.

Finally Free is one of those books you buy a dozen of and keep on hand. Pornography is an epidemic. It’s a huge industry, widely and easily accessibly, and the percentage of people who view it is high. Many of these viewers start at a young age. Heath shares his own story. He viewed it for the first time at eight years old. I also was introduced to pornography at eight years old. It’s not uncommon. A lot of people who are introduced early fight it late into life. Finally Free provides hope and p ...more

My great friend Kyle Beckrich's review couldn't be more true...
"This book is a must read for anyone who wants to seriously fight their sin as well as for those who are mentoring/discipling others. This book from start to finish was Christ-centered and grace-filled, yet did not shy away from the serious consequences of sin."

Heath walks the reader through the seriousness of sin, its consequences, and how we can put our sin to death by God's transforming grace. And like Kyle said if you want to

While I read this for a seminary class, it's by no means an academic book. Immensely practical and urgently needed, this is probably the best book I've read on overcoming addiction to pornography--a huge problem that I encounter all the time in discipleship and counseling with church members. While many books seem to approach the subject with a mindset of inducing guilt in order to produce change, Lambert assumes (correctly, in my experience) that most Christians addicted to pornography are alre ...more

Heath Lambert has written a highly practical and gospel-centered book which is sure to help anyone willing to apply the principles it teaches. Written specifically to help those ensnared in pornography, Finally Free offers eight straightforward strategies for freedom, all of which are rooted in a Biblical perspective on human sin and our dependence on God's grace for victory over it. Lambert offers insightful advice on familiar strategies (e.g. confession and accountability) and suggests other h ...more

This book is Christ saturated. I’ve read a few books on the subject but this one delivers the best advice for real victory and change - Christ. Although Lambert does offer practical measures to take in overcoming lust, he makes clear that these things are just watering and planting and clearing the way, but it’s Christ alone who gives the growth (victory). He truly believes the gospel is powerful and has dealt a deadly blow to sin’s dominion over the Christian and he presents that biblical truth ...more

Excellent resource! Any self-help book that uses a discipleship is worth a read. Even for those not facing this particular temptation, the principles here apply widely. For those who dealing with this book’s specific aim, wow, this is very practical and balanced. I was hoping for a solid, succinct resource to have on hand, and this knocks it out of the park.

This is THE BOOK for every guy who has struggled with lust and felt like it’s an insurmountable obstacle. Lambert writes with incredible clarity that identifies eight areas to fight pornography with. The stories he shares are relatable and at times it felt like I was reading my own thoughts, word-for-word. His ideas are straight from Scripture and he does an amazing job linking the Biblical text to straightforward, practical applications. Easily the best book I have read that deals with this sub ...more

A short, but good book on an important topic. If you struggle, or you are counseling someone who struggles, this book will be helpful. Action items are included at the end of each chapter. A great book to use for people disciping others one on one.

Recently someone came to my office, seeking counsel. This person had been struggling with pornography since they were 14 years old. This person was burdened with guilt. They needed help. I wanted to help.

I remembered I had ran across Finally Free: Fighting for Purity with the Power of Grace, a book on how to be set free from pornography. I went ahead and purchased it, seeking answers on how to help others with what has been described as The New Narcotic. Below is a review:

Let me begin my review by saying this has just become my 'Go To' book in helping anyone deal with sexual sins like pornography. However, don't let the word 'pornography' scare you off. These strategies Lambert lays out would be great in the fight for faith against so many other sins: jealousy, envy, greed, discontentment, anxiety, fear, worry, covetousness, gluttony and any number of other sins.

What an incredible book! Let's start right off with the fact that this is like no other book on pornography I have ever read. Instead of being about statistics, guilt and strategies to keep pornography away from yourself, it is a book about what is more excellent. I am reminded of a famous sermon by Puritan Thomas Chalmers, The Expulsive Power of a New Affection, which says it does no good to remove idols and sinful acts from our lives if we do not replace them with something greater. And this i ...more

This was very good. Although written primarily to address pornography, everything Lambert says applies equally to all manifestations of lust. As such, this is a great book for all men to read. There were a number of things I particularly appreciated:
- His focus is not on modifying behaviour, but on real, lasting, Christ centred, grace fuelled heart change, from which all else flows.
- He pinpoints the root of all sin (and particularly sexual sin) as greed and selfish, arrogant pride (these chapte

Intensely practical book on how to fight addiction with the power of grace. The focus is on lust, though the principles could be broadly applied to anything. With such an excessive amount of books on this topic, it's nice to have one that is both helpful and practical. I'll be using many of the principles in this book in my own pastoral ministry. ...more
Three stars for good insights. I think this book has some really helpful things to say about battling pornography use. I especially thought that Lambert's advice on effective accountability is going to be key for readers. The chapters on radical measures, confession, and renewed focus on one's spouse are really good, too. These insights are worth the price of the book.

The biggest weakness that I see is that Lambert ignores the biological side of pornography addiction. For many men, pornography u

I am not in full agreement with Lambert on counseling methodology. I am convinced that a more integrative approach between Scripture and psychology is not only good, but often necessary. That being said, I fully endorse this book.

One may complain that Lambert neglects the ways in which a sex addict is, in at least some sense, a victim of the aggressive porn industry, or of whoever introduced the sufferer to pornography. While acknowledging that there is a legitimate addiction at play, he focuses

"This book is about the amazing power of Jesus Christ to free you from pornography." (Page 12). The reality is that many men to some degree or another feel the powerful pull of pornography. Its widespread affect is astonishing. I have read a few books dealing with various aspects of human sexuality, and so far this one is my favorite. I'm not saying I don't find the other books useful. What I am saying is that many books by the nature of this topic will, to some degree, stir up desire in people. ...more

This might go on my “read annually” list. His treatment of this specific issue is broadly applicable: “Whatever you perceive the degree of your struggle to be—whether minor or major—your sin is enough for a just and vengeful God to send you to hell forever. As true as that statement is, whether your struggle is major or minor, your sin is not nearly as strong as the grace is Jesus to transform you.” (p. 159)

As a mom of all boys, I started this book to prepare me for their teenage years. I was overwhelmed by how helpful his advice was for all sinful habits. It was the most helpful, straight forward, non sugar coated advice to biblically dealing with all sinful habits (focusing on sexual sin) I have ever read. I would highly recommend this easy read to all christian adults.

Really a synopsis of what I already had the privilege of listening to in person from Heath last year at the ACBC Biblical counseling conference in Montana. The principles are helpful as he hits on the power of God's grace, having humility, and the one that really helped me greatly was a lack of gratefulness and contentment for all that God has given us. To fight the battle against lust and sexual immorality it's beneficial to focus on all that we have to be thankful for. ...more

Incredibly helpful, especially the anecdotes Lambert draws from a wealth of pastoral experience dealing with men who suffer from pornography addictions.

The book is also succinct and to the point, not giving itself to the longwindedness of other books of the genre.

A grace-centered encouragement for purity.

This book is gospel-centered and filled with truth to help you and others fight for purity. I thought the intro was a bit pretentious, but the book was an encouraging read. I'd recommend this over other books, but I think I'm still on the hunt for a #1 recommended read.
