The God-First Life: Uncomplicate Your Life, God's Way

A simple and sustainable path to a deep and satisfying walk with Christ There are thousands of how-to books for improving various areas of life---self, relationships, finances, fitness, business, marriage, family. And there are nearly as many books written for believers offering a framework for the 'right' approach to a new life in God. What if it were possible, Pastor Stovall Weems asks, to boil it all down to one practical, un-complicated principle that would yield the vibrant, purposeful spiritual life so many are looking for? What if, in our relationship with God, we had one simple and sustainable touch point to experience a deep and satisfying walk with Christ? In The God-First Life, Weems shows that true success in our walk with God and in life in general is not an issue of need, but an issue of order. Brilliantly unpacking the simple Scripture in Matthew 6:33, Weems gives a fresh and practical perspective on what Christian 'discipleship' is about. Bringing clarity, depth, and simplicity, Pastor Weems makes clear core truths that have been misunderstood by many Christians and non-Christians alike

I had the opportunity to review Pastor Stovall Weems’ book “The God First Life“, which went on sale this week.  Pastor Weems explains that to live a God first life, we need to seek God AND His righteousness FIRST, then all the other things will be added to us.

The book makes a logical progression from salvation, our adoption into the new family of believers, our new life in Christ, and the freedom that it brings us.    He talks about the roadblocks that new believers encounter along the road.  I honestly have to say that this would have been a really helpful book to me in my early walk, but it’s been most helpful now as well.

Weems explains how our decision for a God first life is a one-time decision not a daily choice.  He also gives the reader several foundational decisions the saved believer needs to make:

I will make God’s family my primary family

I will engage in the community life of the church.

I will be filled by the Spirit

I will worship God on my own and with my church family

I will spend time with God through prayer and His Word

I will give of myself and my means

I will experience the freedom, joy and blessing that God offers

While this book full of foundational truths, it is a must-read book for believers of every level of maturity, including pastors.  Everyone will get a great deal out of truth from it.

Stovall Weems is the founder and lead pastor of Celebration Church in Jacksonville, FL. Celebration is a global, diverse, growing multisite church, with more than twelve thousand people in weekly attendance. As a pastor, teacher, writer and sought-after conference speaker, his ministry focuses on building the local church, reaching people with the gospel, and developing passionate followers of Christ. Stovall and his wife, Kerri, have three children, Kaylan, Stovie, and Annabelle.

For such a small book, there is a ton of helpful information in here. The God First Life: Uncomplicate Your Life, God's Way by Stovall Weems took me by complete surprise. Truth be told, I was not expecting all that much when I started this book. I figured it would be just another "7 Steps to [fill in the blank]" book, but it really wasn't that at all.

As opposed to a checklist of how to live God's way, this little book was really more of a hand-holding (in a good way!) guide to HOW to put God first in your life and what that practically looks like. For me personally, practical advice is so much more helpful than theory. And this book was full of practical, down-to-earth, do-able advice.

While I was reading this book, I kept having the thought that it would be a great read for a fairly new believer. One of the things I struggled with as a new believer was how to approach the Bible. I didn't know where to start or what to make of it. Weems offers great advice for how to read the Bible and get the most of out the time you spend there.

The God First Life would also make a great class/discussion group book. I was hoping that Weems would write a study book to go along with it, and what do you know? In looking up the cover image for this post I saw that he does, in fact, have a study guide and a DVD.

I wouldn't want someone who has been a believer for a long time to think this book doesn't have anything to offer them. In my own reading, I found that my decision to join a church and be involved in the life of that church was confirmed in a powerful way.

The God-First Life is book about simply living your life in a prioritized way where the verse found in Matthew 6:33 is foundation and God is first. This is a short simple read that would greatly benefit a new believer or a young Christian and encourage them to see that a living the born again life must have balance.

"Stop trying to just ‘add’ God to your life. Our lives become a mess when they are out of order. Make God your first priority." -Stovall Weems

This is not a very deep theological type of book, it's quite simple and practical. Seasoned believers may only benefit from reading the God-First Life as a reminder or refresher as to why it is important to seek God first in everything you do. However, if that seasoned believer is not living a balanced life, this would be a great resource.

But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. - Matthew 6:33

This would be a good book for new Christians. Seasoned Christians may not find anything new here. Weems emphasizes the importance of making a quality decision to put God first and then live out that decision. How that is done is what the book is about. This book does not contain the extreme discipleship life we have seen some authors encourage recently. This is just a very practical book. See my full review at http://bit.ly/1jfcKPA.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from the publisher for the purpose of this review.

Simple but powerful guide primarily aimed towards new and/or struggling Christians who are trying to make God first in their lives. Positive, encouraging, never judgmental - Weems pens a worthy text. Short read, and those 3 hours may change your life.
