This work by E. T. A. Hoffmann was originally published in 1821. Born in Königsberg, East Prussia, in 1776, Hoffmann's family were all jurists, and during his youth he was initially encouraged to pursue a career in law. However, in his late teens Hoffman became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy, and spent much of his time reading German classicists and attending lectures by, amongst others, Immanuel Kant. Hoffman went on to produce a great range of both literary and musical works. Probably Hoffman's most well-known story, produced in 1816, is 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', due to the fact that - some seventy-six years later - it inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. In the same vein, his story 'The Sandman' provided both the inspiration for L o Delibes's ballet Copp lia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called 'The Uncanny'. (Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature.") Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann, better known by his pen name E. T. A. Hoffmann (Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hoffmann), was a German Romantic author of fantasy and horror, a jurist, composer, music critic, draftsman and caricaturist. His stories form the basis of Jacques Offenbach's famous opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffman appears (heavily fictionalized) as the hero. He is also the author of the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, on which the famous ballet The Nutcracker is based. The ballet Coppélia is based on two other stories that Hoffmann wrote, while Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.

Hoffmann's stories were very influential during the 19th century, and he is one of the major authors of the Romantic movement.

This is Zany!!! in a way that kind of feels forced to my modern-reader eyes. I was amused by the parts about bad poetry. But in the current climate, I just can't find the humor in the "Wimmin, amirite?" attitude that seems to be one of the main points here. Because we only want hunks, ya know, unless the ugly guy is rich, in which case gold-digging reigns. Eyeroll.

Ένα διαφορετικό παραμύθι για μεγάλους, σουρεαλιστικό, ένα παραμύθι για την απόσταση ανάμεσα στο πραγματικό και το φανταστικό, την καθημερινότητα και την ονειροπόληση. Γεμάτο χιούμορ και ειρωνεία.

Πρωτοποριακό ακόμη και για την εποχή μας ή ίσως ειδικά για την εποχή μας.

Δεν είναι εύκολο ανάγνωσμα, θέλει καθαρό μυαλό και συγκέντρωση.

Είναι δύσκολο να κάνει κανείς κριτική για ένα κωμικό παραμύθι που γράφτηκε μεταξύ του 1819 και του 1821, θα πρέπει να λάβει υπόψιν του το κοινό στο οποίο απευθυνόταν, στις συνήθειες και στο χιούμορ της εποχής.
Διαβάζεται πολύ ευχάριστα και νομίζω ότι οι μικρότερης ηλικίας αναγνώστες θα το απολαύσουν πολύ περισσότερο.

Παραμύθι για μεγάλους, έξυπνο και απολαυστικό, με αμέτρητες διακειμενικές αναφορές. Πολύ προσεγμένη έκδοση, με εξαιρετικά διαφωτιστικό επίμετρο (σχεδόν το μισό βιβλίο). Ό,τι πρέπει για πρώτη επαφή με Χόφμαν.

Παραμύθι, μύθι, μύθι το κουκί και το ρεβίθι... Και τα καρότα στην περίπτωση μας.

Ανάλαφρη, αστεία ιστορία που διαβάζεται σε ελάχιστο χρόνο. Ό,τι πρέπει για ένα ευχάριστο απόγευμα.

I loved Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker! I figured I might enjoy another tale from him. It felt very much like a fairytale from a Grimm collection. There were similarities to the narrative style of Baum in The Wizard of Oz and Irving’s Sleepy Hollow. It wasn’t my favorite but it was entertaining.

Σαν κείμενο έχει πολλά περισσότερα να δώσει από μία απλή χιουμοριστική ιστορία. Σε μια δεύτερη ανάγνωση κρύβονται βαθύτερα νοήματα έτοιμα να τα ανακαλύψει ο αναγνώστης. Το βρήκα εξαιρετικά έξυπνο και καλογραμμένο. Τα καυστικά σχόλια και οι διακειμενικές αναφορές διανθίζουν υπέροχα την αφήγηση.

I hadn't even known about this book until I recently stumbled across this translation. What a weird, wild and absolutely wonderful story! It's somewhat similar to Hoffman's "Nutcracker" in some ways, but even crazier. I thought it was actually more fun. The ending is brilliantly silly.

Девочкам, что видят своё счастье в принце на белом коне, будет полезно познакомиться с произведением Гофмана «Королевская невеста». Ведь не так важно, чтобы принц был именно на благородном жеребце, необходимо наличие непосредственно того, кто на сём белом животном восседает. И так может оказаться, что принц явится в образе гнома, причём не самого простого гнома, а никак не меньше ранжиром короля, пускай даже короля овощей. Дальнейший ход мыслей девочек ясен — забыть о прежнем женихе и всё сделать для последующей беззаботной жизни. Отныне девочка — королева овощей. Можно рассмеяться, но правда сурова к тем, кто закрывает на детали глаза.
