Coffee With Pleasure: Just Java and World Trade

Our morning coffee is the fruit of the labour of millions of workers and producers in the South. Unfortunately, many of them earn paltry wages for work done under very difficult conditions. Chances are, the coffee you are drinking was grown by farmers who labored long, back-breaking hours while exposed to harmful chemicals in order to pocket a few cents.

In an attempt to break the cycle of malnutrition, dependence, illiteracy and violence, an alternative trade system, known worldwide as "fair trade," has been created. The products of this type of exchange, encourage consumers and retailers to opt for coffee which is "fairly traded."

This book looks at the fair trade movement by examining the issues surrounding the production and trading of coffee. Using Mexico as an example, part one describes the conventional coffee trade, tracing the coffee bean's journey from the tree, through the hands of several intermediaries in both the North and South, to its final destination as a cup of coffee. Part two presents the fair trade concept through the example of the Mexican peasant organization which was one of the first to embrace the fair trade system, and which was also a pioneer in the production of organic coffee. The third part explores the situation of fair trade in North America, and provides comprehensive sources and references for anyone who wants to get involved, at any level.

Laure Waridel est co-fondatrice d’Équiterre, une organisation vouée à la promotion de choix écologiques et socialement responsables. Pionnière du commerce équitable au Québec, elle a mis sur pied la campagne de sensibilisation et d’action Un juste café. Ses recherches, ses écrits, ses conférences et ses interventions médiatiques ont grandement contribué à faire croître le mouvement pour une consommation responsable au Québec.

Sociologue spécialisée en développement international, Laure Waridel a aussi complété une maîtrise en environnement avec l’Eco-Research Chair on Environmental Law and Policy-POLIS de l’Université Victoria.

Elle est aussi auteure et chroniqueure. Elle a écrit les livres Acheter c’est voter (2005), ainsi que de L’enVers de l’assiette (1998, 2003), Une cause café (1997), de même que de Coffee with pleasure (2001). Sa voix s’est notamment fait connaître à l’émission Indicatif Présent à la radio de Radio-Canada.

En 2002, Laure Waridel était qualifiée de nouvelle leader par La Presse et La Gazette, alors que le magazine Maclean’s la présentait comme l’une des « 25 young Canadians who are already changing our world. » Pour son grand engagement à la cause environnementale, elle a aussi été promue en 2005 au prestigieux Cercle des Phénix de l’environnement en plus d’être nommée « Personnalité de la semaine » de La Presse/Radio-Canada. En 2006, elle était décorée « Chevalier de l’ordre de la pléiade » par l’Assemblée parlementaire de la Francophonie.

Depuis janvier 2007, elle se consacre principalement à la réalisation d’un documentaire avec l’Office National du Film du Canada, et à l’écriture d’un nouveau livre. Après avoir été longtemps présidente de l’organisme, Laure y participe maintenant à titre de membre et de bénévole. »
