Fantastic photographs found in the attic of the Medford Historical Society here in Massachusetts. Gruesome in some ways, as most Civil War photography is, but a lot of the landscapes are amazingly minimal and quite beautiful. The ruins of Richmond photographs are stunning. You just cannot imagine that this happened on American soil.

Over 5,000 original photographs of the Civil War were discovered in the attic of the Medford Historical Society in Massachusetts. They were edited by Constance Sullivan with an introduction by William Stapp, an authority on nineteenth century photography. The books includes photographs from many of the major campaigns of the Civil War, and gives the viewer pause seeing the destruction of landscapes, towns and the lives of so many soldiers, both young and old. It is a moving collection of photographs.
