"Glamour. Cosmo. SELF. Ladies' Home Journal. Vogue." In an industry that has been in a downward spiral for years, these magazines--and other women--focused magazines like them--have not only retained their readership, they've increased it. Every month, five million-plus women peel back the slick cover of their favorite magazine to thumb through pages filled with tidings an ...more

Wow. It took me three months to finish this book. The writing style is extremely easy to follow though, so it had nothing to with that. What kept tripping me up were discrepancies between findings and conclusions. Also, the arguments that were built up didn't present much new insight into the topic. A lot of women refer to magazines as guilty pleasures, which already is an acknowledgment that they aren't exactly the best reading material. Instead of telling me the drawbacks of women's magazines, ...more

A well researched book that all women should read. It helps us to feel good about ourselves when we have true and realistic images and articles and advertisements.

A helpful insight into the philosophies of many magazines and beauty companies. It led me to choose to buy some companies and no longer spend my money on others.

This book also gave me the tools to have good conversations with my middle school age daughter.

Good topic, but handled in a very superficial way. I didn't run into any new ideas with this one; if it's the first time you're reading about the shoddy quality of info and rampant airbrushing in women's mags, you may like this book better than I did.

Jennifer Nelson has written a kinda-sorta condemnation of the women's magazines that have published her articles, and a kinda-sorta defense of their continued popularity. It depends on which article (chapter) you read.

You'll find the breezy tone of a magazine profile throughout, and liberal use of the words "slick" and "glossy." You'll find the author's personal vehemence in the chapter about abuse of young models, and you'll find a tinge of conservative ideology in the chapter about politics.

Literary Mama
Jennifer Nelson has written for all the big "chick slicks": Glamour, Cosmo, O and many others. She understands how these magazines tick; in Airbrushed Nation she reveals all.

Another interesting read, and it's easier to follow than the last one!
That being said, I only read chapters four and five, because they were the only ones I specifically needed for my research, which is why this book goes into the "hope to get back to" shelf.

Interesting... but not earth-shattering. "Airbrushed" in the title is slightly misleading, airbrushing was covered in one chapter. However, the advertising chapter was most interesting because, honestly, who reads these magazines for their thought provoking content?

The author failed to mention two magazines that don't follow the patterns of the magazines she dislikes: Bust and Nylon. Both were around (and still are). Not sure if this was an oversight or done on purpose...

More shallow then the magazines it slams.

This book is well written, but doesn't contain any information that is particularly new or surprising, especially if you are in any way familiar with women's studies.

Important topic. Crummy writing.

Makes you second guess buying "chick slicks." I don't trust their content anymore if this is all true.
