The escalating growth of our technological knowledge in the last century has been nothing short of breathtaking but has it rendered us wiser? Or godlier? We have lost something priceless and seem to be trying to replace it with more and more information. We need wisdom! Communications technology leaves us no rest to work things out mostly we just react and worry, and fail and react again. We make business decisions; ethical decisions; relationship decisions; against a continuously moving landscape that doesnt allow them to be satisfying consistent dependable. To cope we must have wisdom! There is no better starting point than the Book of Proverbs. Its purpose is to impart wisdom to those who want it. From its pages God promises to set us on The path of life (Prov. 1524). You dont understand! I dont have time! You dobecause, after years of painstaking study, John Kitchen has produced a work that is authoritative, comprehensive and insightful. He examines the chronology, authorship, composition, structure and context of Proverbs and does the hard work of providing crossreferences alerting the reader to rich veins running beneath the surface of Proverbs and other Biblical books. You want wisdom to help run your life? Think you are running out of time? Then this is a priceless, timeless book that will reward your investment as you seek to gain wisdom, rather than knowledge.
John grew up on the plains of rural Iowa as part of a good, but unbelieving family. After he, his sister, and his father nearly died in an asphyxiation accident, his mother began seeking God. A few years later John's sister came to personal faith in Christ through the witness of friends. She in turn led John to faith in Christ while he was in junior high school. Later, as a young adult, John sensed God’s call to ministry and began training for His service.
John studied at Crown College (Saint Bonifacius, MN), earning a BA in Bible and Theology and then at Columbia Biblical Seminary (Columbia, SC), receiving the MDiv.
From 1987 to 2001 John served as the senior pastor of the Plymouth Alliance Church (Plymouth, Wisconsin). During that time John earned the DMin from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School.
From 2001 to 2020 he served as the senior pastor of the Stow Alliance Fellowship (Stow, Ohio).
Since 2020 John and his wife have served an international church in the Middle East.
By God's grace John has taught God’s Word beyond the local church, in countries around the world and in the United States in conferences, camps, seminars and on college campuses.
This was my go-to commentary for Proverbs. He addresses every verse in the book, so it's a good one to have on the shelf for a quick look up. His treatment of the lexical and contextual data is thorough and thus helpful, but also brief so as to not burden the reader. Kitchen also is adept at applying the Proverbs. Because of his treatment of every verse, it doesn't allow him to linger too long on any one verse, but he and his editor have managed to retain great insight in a short amount of space.
If I had to choose only one commentary for the Proverbs, I would choose this one (even over Waltke). I like that Kitchen give commentary on EVERY SINGLE VERSE of the Proverbs. He handles the text well, and has good application of the text. Phenomenal job!
