Mademoiselle Fifi, Guy de Maupassant
Mademoiselle Fifi, is a short story by French writer Guy de Maupassant, published in 1882 in a collection of the same title. Like many of his short stories, such as Boule de Suif and Deux Amis, the story is set during the Franco-Prussian War and explores themes of class barriers, contrasts between the French and German participants, and the pointlessness of the war.

In Maupassant's second collection of stories – most originally published in Gil Blas during 1882, under the pseudonym of ‘Maufrigneuse’ – he returns to some of the key themes that made him famous, namely prostitution and the Franco-Prussian War. Although his prose remains as limpid as ever, there is a blustery, man-of-the-world quality to the writing here that I found slightly dispiriting when compared with Maupassant at his light, ironic best – a sense that he is taking his own settled opinions ...more

Like many "classic" books, this one would be a lot less painful to read if I could temporarily forget that I'm female. But there are sentences like "Suddenly I saw my armchair absconding at a waddle" so...

I read this book when I was about twelve years old, and there are images from it that still linger in my memory. I plan to re-read it when I'm old and gray.

Maupassant is a master of the short story, and no mistake.

My very first impression about this story, was not at all positive. In fact, I felt that it is named as complicatedly as the writer, in a desperate bid to attract readers and I was really bored with the slow pace and difficult to pronounce names of Protagonists. In the very beginning, the feminist in me reared her head and decided that the writer is a man given to worldly pleasures, has no respect for women and the story is going to be a steady tale of vulgarity served under the guise of romance ...more

Menarik.

Recommends it for: Amateurs d'histoires courtes
Recommended to Maria by: Moi-même.

* Ambientes: Palaciego, iglesia, urbano.
* Eventos: Guerra franco-prusiana (1870-71).
* Figuras recurrentes: Militar representado/a negativamente, prostituta virtuosa.

I've arranged my thoughts into a haiku:

But don't fuck around."

Henri René Albert Guy de Maupassant was a popular 19th-century French writer. He is one of the fathers of the modern short story. A protege of Flaubert, Maupassant's short stories are characterized by their economy of style and their efficient effortless dénouement. He also wrote six short novels. A number of his stories often denote the futility of war and the innocent civilians who get crushed i ...more
