I was maybe thirteen when I read this, and it resonated so much I've always considered it a favourite of mine.
It was the way he ran away from home to fend for himself, to live incognito in a tree-house in the middle of the city, and how he observed the lives of the strangers in the park below that really struck me. At that age, it was almost a fantasy of mine to live that sort of life; away from school, annoying parents, and any sort of authority. It's a lifestyle not without its pitfalls, as we ...more

I read this book when I was a little girl the first time:o) Jay-jay, an 11-year-old boy, escapes his rotten foster mom and ends up living in a tree-house in Central Park. The way he gathers building materials, builds the house, manages to keep getting food for himself, cares for a puppy and continues to elude a drug addict that has it out for him makes for a good book. His friendship with an elderly lady who goes to the park each morning is touching and adds a lot to the story.
