Seeing Sugar

Rate this book
Kate Martin thinks fourth grade is going to be the best year ever . . . until Sugar Rose Simms walks in, with her long blond hair and sweet Southern accent. Not only does Kate lose her prized front row seat to the new girl, but she finds out she needs glasses! Kate isn't happy about becoming a "four eyes," but she's astonished to discover what she's been missing. When she looks through her glasses and feels like she's seeing for the first time, Kate grabs a camera to capture everything. The details in her photos surprise her-especially a shot of a lonely Sugar Rose looking like she needs a friend.

I am adapting to reading juvenile fiction with my 10 y/o daughter and it is more difficult than I assumed, choosing what I would call girly books rather than the macho juvenile fiction I read with my sons. But for the joy of sharing the love of reading with my daughter, I will adapt. I didn't really enjoy this as much as some of our other books, and was relieved that she didn't either. She calls it 3 stars, I call it 2....since this is my review 2 it is!

Decent story line about a young lady who loses her teachers pet front row seat, because her teacher wants to make the new girl (Sugar) feel welcome. On top of this dilemma she needs glasses, which as we all know is the result of sitting farther from the teacher, and this of course is the new girls fault...justifying our hatred of her.

Nonetheless we had fun discussing the story line and ethical dilemmas and emotions that go along with conflict and jealousy. I wouldn't recommend this, but I wouldn't advise against reading it either. Perhaps some 8-10 years old girls will enjoy this.

"Seeing Sugar" is a familiar school story, yet it's told with such style and detail that you soon become engaged in it. Kate's an easily relatable character. This is especially true when she learns she needs glasses and starts to see the world in a whole new light because of them. A nice book for elementary and middle schoolers.

I started this book at my cousins house, that lives in Idaho, but I didn't finish it before it was time to leave,
but I found it at the library and so then I got to finish it.
