The language of Jane Austen: A study of some aspects of her vocabulary

This study examines in detail the vocabulary associated with each of the four main components of 'character' in Jane Austen's head, heart, spirits, manners. By comparing Jane Austen's use of these words with their use in other literature of the period, Myra Stokes enhances our understanding not only of Jane Austen's prose, but also of the nineteenth-century society in which she lived.
