Damian Drooth – Ace Detective: The Case of the Pop Star’s Wedding by Barbara Mitchelhill is a story about a young boy who unintentionally solves a crime committed against a popstar at their wedding. Through accusing the wrong person the real thief is identified. This is a great introduction to the Mystery genre for children and allows them, at multiple stages, to interact with the plot and make predictions about what they think may happen or who they feel is the thief. The story provides lots of opportunity to assess the child’s comprehension of the story; ‘what evidence is there that this is not Damian’s first case?’; ‘What evidence is there that a crime has been committed?’; ‘How has the author varied her use of language to keep the reader interested?’ The story can also be utilised in a hot-seating exercise where the children pose questions to the characters including Damian, the thief, the popstar. As a follow-up exercise to this the class could be tasked with writing a newspaper report about the events of the story using the information in the book as well as in the hot-seating to inspire their descriptive writing.
