Drummer Girl by Bridget Tyler is a fast and frenetic coming of age novel that will appeal to many readers. It centres on a girl band Crush, who wins a competition to go to Los Angeles, with the opportunity to make it big on the music scene.

The book opens with a bang, on the aftermath of a shocking murder. It then rewinds to eight months earlier, to St Gabriel’s Sixth Form, London, where we witness a disparate group of girls come together, at the suggestion of fellow pupil, Harper McKenzie, to fo

So I won this on a goodreads giveaway and I'm really glad I did! This normally wouldn't have been a book I jumped up to buy, unfortunately.

However, I'm really shocked by how much I actually found myself enjoying this fast-paced, quick read! I admit because of my experience with pop-culture/talent show/fame/Hollywood books, I was already judging it. I thought it would be too sugary for my liking but oh it was dark! Not in an obvious way that makes it unenjoyable for people seeking a sweet tale, b

When I read a YA that features a heavy dose of pop culture, I sometimes have mixed feelings - not because it's a a terrible subject to explore, not at all, in fact. More that I worry about the future. Mostly because I am a worrier in general, but also because I get all concerned about how relevant this is going to be in a few years time. But then, just as I started writing this review and waffling on about this, it dawned on me that reality telly isn't exactly a new phenomemon - how many years h ...more

I received this book through Goodreads First Read.

I really like these type of books that mixes music with things that you will usually see on reality tv.

At first, it started off with a girl lying dead floating in a pool and rewinds to the beginning when it all happened... 5 girls grouping together to form a group to compete in a tv singing competition.

Most of the time, the book was set in LA which is where finalists of the US and UK shows go and they have an amazing experience. From meeting idol

I'd been eagerly anticipating this book so when I won a copy I was ecstatic! Drummer Girl tells follows Lucy and her friends as they rise to fame after entering TV talent show Project Next with their band Crush.

The opening of Drummer Girl immediately grabbed me, as the first scene is Lucy witnessing the discovery of her friend Harper's body in a pool. Then the book flashes back to eight months earlier and the rest of the book leads up to that mom

Teenage girls, music, competitions, friendships, romances, alcohol, drugs and a whole load of other trouble is what 'Drummer Girl' is from beginning to end. I can see this being a really popular novel, especially for those between the ages of 14 and 18. It is a coming of age story where the characters want popularity, success and romance. However, they all soon discover that life has its fair share of danger and there are some adult themes covered, such as drugs, alcohol and young girls being ta ...more

First off I'd like to say that I won a copy of this book on a goodreads giveaway and honestly I didn't know what to expect. But I am so so so happy that I got the opportunity to win this because I don't know if I'd have ever read it if I hadn't won it, simply because I hadn't heard of the book, the author or anything about it before the giveaway and I usually like the books that I read to be referenced by something I have seen on goodreads or tumblr etc. When the book arrived the edges were hot ...more

I first heard about Drummer Girl at a blogger event and I knew I had to read it and I am so glad I got a copy for review. From the minute I began reading I was hooked and found it very hard to put down. Drummer Girl turned out to be an unexpected read with lots of 'real life issues' dealt with in an appropriate way, drug use, body issues, peer pressure, and fame going to your head.

Drummer Girl follows the adventures of the band Crush, as they achieve their dream and win Project Next, and end u

Drummer Girl started off with an interesting prologue, but fell short of expectations. The plot of Drummer Girl had such potential but there were aspects of the book that made it less than exciting.

Drummer Girl follows the story of Lucy who is the drummer of the band Crush. Along with her best friend and other friends from school, they enter a band competition and needless to say they won it and are jet set off to Hollywood. A good majority of the story fol

'Drummer Girl' author, Bridget Tyler, has written a fast-paced and enjoyable read about a group of girls who form a band and try to make it big in the spotlight of Los Angeles. I enjoyed it a lot more than I originally thought and the ending leaves me hope that there might be a sequel somewhere down the line.

The story opens with the shocking death of Harper McKenzie, one of the members of the band. This grabbed my attention immediately and left me guessing all the way through the book about wh

The problem with Drummer Girl is that it can't decide what it wants to be. Gritty rock and roll cautionary tale of drugs and sex and debauchery? Gossip Girl-esque teen chick lit? Murder mystery? It's trying to be a blend of all three, and for me, that didn't work.

It also seems to offer up a lot of convenience and stereotyping. Five teenage girls, and each one fits into a pigeonhole: good girl, Barbie doll, outspoken frenemy, quiet one, girl with body image issues. There's never a real feel of f

Apologies for any mistakes in advance. I'll try to review this book without spoilers!

Five London schoolgirls form a band called 'Crush' and everything is going great! They've just won the UK semi-final of a popular talent contest and are jetting off to LA, surely it's going to perfect, right? Wrong. Lucy has to keep the beat for the rest of the band and bring them back on track. Except, she finds her best friend shot dead in a LA pool...

To start with I was completely blown away by this book. I r

I got a signed copy of this through Goodreads giveaway, and tbh, I'm so happy I did! I wouldn't have read the book otherwise: five 17 yo students from London win a big music contest and become rock stars in LA? no thanks. But yeah, it was really really fun.

The book starts when one of the girls of the band is found shot dead in a pool (a la Gatsby), and then goes back to before they became famous and all that fandango. They win the semifinals quite early in the book, and most of the plot takes pl

I really enjoyed drummer girl and I found I quite literally couldn't put it down.

Drummer girl is about a british girl group who have just won a huge international talent contest and starts quite dramatically with Lucy finding her best friend Harper dead in the swimming pool in their LA home. The story then rewinds back as you follow their story through the talent contest as they are flown out to LA to compete and charts all the highs and lows of the girls as they find their feet in the world of

Drummer Girl begins with Harper dead in the pool of Crush’s house in LA. From there we flash back to how Crush came to be and what caused Harper’s death. The book is narrated in third person with the focus shifting mainly between the girls in the band, though Lucy and Harper do get the lion’s share.

Despite the frequent change in point of view Drummer Girl is easy to follow and really interesting. Crush might have been formed for a reality show but the book is much a more about the girls then the

This book was great! I received it as a gift and when I first looked at it, I didn't really think it was going to be that good, cause I normally read books like TMI and THG, but that's why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover (cause the cover isn't that good) cause I loved it.
I was instantly dragged in, not only because the protagonist is named Lucy (like me!) or that she also plays the drums (also like me!) but because it had a content page! Now that may seem weird to you, but before I read

I actually really liked this book. Me likey.
There were SO many characters, but I didn't get confused, because they all had different personalities.
A lot happened in this book.
So much drama. SO much crap.
The beginning left me in a way where I wanted to know what the hell had just happened.
I would've liked to have read about the actual audition though, as I felt there was a little gap.
Overall a good read. I definitely recommend.

I was kind of whelmed like this book. Not really over-whelmed or even under-whelmed by this book so y'know...whelmed.
The plot kind of skips around, missing out chunks of time without going into much detail and the writing is quite slow.
I can't really say much considering I only read the first 5 chapters but yeah, a load of boys were introduced and everyone became starry-eyed so I didn't really want to get in to any of that.
On the plus side: the book is very pretty and I like the pink pages wow

I got this book thinking it would be your classic X-factor story of how a nobody became rich and famous. My expectations weren't high but I was wrong, this book is not what you expect. I think the 'Intro: Neon Halo' ruined it a bit from the beginning because it was not expected and it would have been a surprising twist if it had not been given away in the first chapter! I think there should be another book after this one because Lucy is a likeable character and I want to see how she goes with he ...more

This was one of those books that I was sad to finish; I was really attached to the characters. Despite the first page telling you how the story was going to end, the writing and the plot kept me on my toes, and I still managed to be surprised at the end.

I'm excited to see what the author does next.

Good. I loved the story. At the end it made me think that maybe. Dreams do come true even if the journey may not be the greatest. You just have to believe, try your best, show that you want it and believe.

I grew up in Berkeley, California in a house filled with books. I started telling stories before I could read, so my mother took dictation until I learned how to turn the words in my head into words on a page. She knew I was going to be a writer when I grew up, but it took me a while to catch up.
