The sheep gave a leap by Hilda Offen is a rhyming action story. The book is about a little boy who introduces a play to his friends in the theatre. The book starts with the little boy introducing a play to his friends on stage. The book goes through all the characters on stage doing an action e.g. the pig twirled around, the sheep gave a leap. The story ends with all the characters taking a bow on stage and the curtain closing.
The book uses rhyme to make it more interesting and appealing for young pupils, the book is also a set of instructions for the pupils to follow and copy the actions that the animals are doing on stage.
The book is highly illustrated with the animals and the little boy doing the actions described in the rhyme. This could be good for EAL and SEN pupils as they may not understand some of the vocabulary being used so can just copy what the characters are doing in the pictures.
This book is most suitable for pupils in Reception/ EYFS as it could be used to introduce the concept of rhyme in Literacy. As thebook is a action book where pupils are being physical and doing stretches and small movements following instructions the book could also be used for physical development in the EYFS.
