I love reading books written by local authors, and Charline Profiri wrote a cute, rhyming picture book using clues to identify animals living in the desert near Tucson. The art work is really interesting and very well done, but I don't know if it would appeal to young children.

OK I may be biased as the author's daughter, but I remember my mother reading 'Goodnight Moon' to me as a child and the best part was finding that little mouse hiding on every page. This book has clever similarities in the interactive seek and find illustrations that give a hint at the animal (it's tracks or shadow for example) that I think children will enjoy searching the pages for.

The rhyming verses are great for reading aloud with your little one beside you. As a child who grew up in the desert foothills of northwest Tucson, Arizona, I appreciate the desert scenery illustrated with unique three dimensional layered images that seem as though they can be touched. The pages have a two dimensional pop-up book feel which is a creative style that is uncommon for picture books.

Since 'Counting Little Geckos' was for much younger children, if your little ones started counting, reading and learning about the desert southwest with CLG, they can graduate to this new book and continue their education!
