Den danske forfatter Jørn Riel (f. 1931) debuterede med romantrilogien "Mine fædres hus" (1970-72), men havde inden da rejst rundt i det meste af verden, blandt andet i forbindelse med forskellige erhverv. Jørn Riel var en del af Lauge Koch-ekspeditionenen (1951-53) og var efterfølgende udstationeret i Grønland i 10 år. Imellem 1964-71 arbejdede han hernæst som FN-observatør, før han omlagde sin karrierevej og blev forfatter. Riel har både udgivet store romaner såvel som små novellesamlinger, og i 2010 blev Jørn Riel tildelt Det Danske Akademis Store Pris, der udover hædersbevisningen består af 300.000 kroner.

Well this was interesting.... and I had a number of problems with it.

One of course was that there was a heavy dosage of "it doesn't matter what religion you are" stuff, which is annoying. Also there was a lot of "noble savage" stuff in it, which was again annoying. Also the concept that the Inuit are a more advanced people than the Norseman and are more capable drives me nuts. Also the way Christianity was portrayed wasn't good. It wasn't shown as bad, it was shown as fine but As good as other religions Which I have serious problems with.

Une histoire plus sombre que la première. J’aime que les Inuits soient décrits comme une communauté brillante contrairement à ce qu’on peut lire à leur sujet.

C’est un bel album pour parler des différences et l’acceptation des autres.

Un deuxième volume un peu plus sombre, l'histoire prend une tournure plus triste et cruelle.

Plongés au coeur des règlements de compte familiaux à l'époque de l'Islande vers l'an Mil, on suit les aventures de Leiv, jeune islandais qui s'impose sur un bateau en menaçant de tuer son capitaine, ayant lui-même tué le père de Leiv. Tout est dans le résumé. Cette mise à mort remise à plus tard, Leiv devient suite à un naufrage un jeune Inuit (ceci expliquant le titre du livre) lors de sa rencontre avec Narua et Apuluk, deux frères et sœurs natifs. Jørn Riel a écrit trois livres, mais ceux-ci sont si fins (145 pages environ) qu'un seul aurait suffit, d'autant plus que l'histoire se suit comme si l'on passait d'un chapitre à un autre, si bien qu'ils se lisent tous trois d'une traite. L'avis est donc le même pour les trois : le livre décrit des paysages, un climat et un état d'esprit qui laissent rêver, et qui sont même choquant lorsqu'on les compare au monde fou dans lequel on vit. La simplicité de leur mode de vie nous font réellement se remettre en question quant à la stupidité de nos actes et habitudes.
Le seul bémol de ce livre, surtout pour ceux qui adorent les livres sur les modes de vie dans le grand Nord, est qu'il y a bien trop peu de descriptions à mon goût. En quelques pages seulement, pleins de choses se passent et j'aurais attendu d'un livre sur les Inuit de cette époque beaucoup plus de descriptions de la chasse, des constructions de leurs tentes et igloos, de leurs voyages, des rituels concernant les esprits etc.
Bien sûr toutes ces choses étaient racontées, mais avec trop peu de détails.

Je recommande donc ce livre pour la qualité du récit, mais je ne pense pas le relire, et me tournerait vers des romans plus descriptifs, si toutefois j'en trouve.

I am enjoying this series, as a look at what life in Greenland and relations between northmen and Inuit must have been like ages ago, but I was a little disappointed with one part of the second book. Namely, the character Leiv starts waxing poetic about his new life with the Inuit, and it dips a little too far into Noble Savage territory for me to be wholly okay with it.

I don't know if it's the time this book was written (1970s) or if it's something getting lost in translation, and it's not a huge flaw in the book. Overall the Inuit characters are fully realized, and don't fall into a lot of tropes that often ensnare POC characters. There's just this one bit that made me give the book some side-eye.

But on the other hand, it gives a talking point for when a child reads this book. It's an advanced readers book so concepts like the noble savage trope shouldn't be beyond discussion. Knowing that part is there going into it will make you better able to discuss it with your kids when they have questions.

Another good thing about this series: so far, the books do well as standalones as well as being read in order. I read book 1 first and have just finished book 2 today, but I could have read them backwards, or 2 without 1, and it still all would have made sense. That can oftentimes be hard to do with a series, so it's nice that this series allows for that.

3.5 stars. Would have been 4 but for that one part.
