It is unfortunate that Tagore is so little read in the west these days. Although mainly known as a poet, he was also a novelist. His novel The Home and the World is a brilliant look at Bengali society during the turbulent period at the beginning of the 20th Century. This companipn to the novel offers insights on various aspects of the book . it is an invaluable source of information and insight for those readers who have little knowledge of Bengali history and society and who are unfamiliar with Tagore's writing and philosophy.
