Sci-fi at its best is about humanity, what it means to be us, and Beyond Humanity tackles that head-on, almost at the expense of actual narrative. More a philosophical discussion in story form than an actual story, it uses quasi-human and non-human characters to really delve deeply into questions about what it does mean to be human. And with likable characters and an unashamedly intelligent hard-working style, it does so rather magnificently. The ending's a little unconvincing, and the whole thing feels like an info-dump, but it's nevertheless rather a hidden gem. Loved it.
