About the author

Helmut K. Anheier is President of the Hertie School of Governance and Professor of Sociology. His research centres on indicator systems, social innovation, culture, philanthropy, and organisational studies. Anheier is the principal academic lead of the Hertie School's annual Governance Report (Oxford University Press). He also holds a Chair of Sociology at Heidelberg University and serves as Academic Director of the Centre for Social Investment. He received his PhD from Yale University in 1986, was a senior researcher at the Johns Hopkins University’s Institute for Policy Studies, Professor of Public Policy and Social Welfare at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) Luskin School of Public Affairs, and Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and Professor of Sociology at Rutgers University. Anheier is author of over 450 publications, many in leading journals, and has received various international awards. Before embarking on an academic career, he served as Social Affairs Officer at the United Nations.

Very comprehensive.

Useful probably not so much for the day-to-day NFP financial management techniques but for setting the context in terms of politics and social development.

Particularly liked the chapters on economics, quite rare for a NFP textbook to include the subject, which obviously has a huge bearing on the field.

Although I am marking it DNF, I am still rating it based on what I read.

Honestly – I went to a college that didn’t require mathematics for a reason. (it was math and/or science) and this book is one of the reasons. Economics is just not my thing. But… I did muscle my way through 26% this long textbook about nonprofits. What I read was interesting but I found that I just do not have the ability to keep pushing my way through. I will look for something more along the lines of “Non-Profits for Dummies” as a way to start really getting a better understanding of the nature this type of organizations.
