Decent introduction to the topic but lacks sited sources, has a few typos, and shows a distinct bias against native Americans in its portrayal of events on the western frontier. One quote illustrating this that stuck out to me was: “to preserve peace and protect Indians from encroaching whites, the permanent Indian frontier was created and provided with a series of forts to mark and guard the frontier.” The portrayal of removing natives from their homelands as “protecting” them from white individuals is particularly troubling here.

Good book with plenty of history covering Fort Riley from 1853 - 1891. I wish it had more content on the 20th Century.
