Throughout the book of Ruth we are reminded that God can pick up the shambles of our lives and weave them together to make something beautiful. As for Esther, we are taught that sometimes we have to face life with courage-but God gives us the strength. With scripture passages, inspirational readings, questions to answer, space for journaling, and a prayer, it's like studying the Bible with Max Lucado.

I picked up Life Lessons from Ruth and Esther while working through the Book of Ruth as part of my Bible study plan, and it ended up being such a meaningful companion guide. This study offers a thoughtful and accessible exploration of both biblical books, breaking down the stories of Ruth and Esther chapter by chapter while connecting their themes to everyday faith, trust, courage, loyalty, and God’s providence. Lucado not only examines Ruth’s unwavering loyalty to Naomi, but also spends time exploring Boaz’s character and the ways he reflects Christ through his compassion, protection, and redemption. The Esther portion was especially helpful for me because I was much less familiar with her story. The study clearly explains the historical context, major themes, and spiritual lessons while emphasizing Esther’s courage and purpose during a difficult and dangerous time.
What I appreciated most about this book was how it encouraged me to reevaluate scripture I thought I already understood. Max Lucado has such a gift for simplifying complex ideas without making them feel watered down or shallow. The reflections and study questions helped me slow down, think more deeply, and personally connect with what I had just read rather than simply moving through the text. I also loved how approachable and conversational the writing felt, making it easy to stay engaged throughout the study.
This was a wonderful companion for personal Bible study and would also work beautifully for a group study. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a deeper but still accessible understanding of Ruth and Esther and the timeless lessons found within both stories.
Meh. Maybe this was a case of getting out of it what I put into it, but the guide wasn’t super compelling or insightful for me. Not that Ruth and Esther aren’t but these study guides didn’t add too much for me.
I thought this was a great thought provoking devotional about two major women in the Bible. A highly recommended devotional for women AND men. I don't think men are asked to read and esteem these books the way women are.
