Ο σκοπός αυτού του βιβλίου είναι ν' αφηγηθεί την ιστορία των έμβιων όντων εύληπτα κι όσο γίνεται πιο λεπτομερειακά, με τρόπο κατανοητό για τον μέσο αναγνώστη και χρήσιμο για τον σπουδαστή. Αν και δεν προϋπόθεσα καμία εξοικείωση του αναγνώστη με τη βιολογία ή τη γεωλογία, προσπάθησα να μην του μιλήσω με συγκαταβατική απλότητα, ούτε ν' αποφύγω πιο δύσκολες κι αμφιλεγόμενες πλευρές του θέματος (όπως, για παράδειγμα, την προέλευση της ζωής). Η ζωή υφίσταται σ' αυτόν τον μικροσκοπικό πλανήτη εδώ και περισσότερα από 2.500.000 χρόνια και δεν υπάρχει πιο μεγαλεπήβολο θέμα απ' την πολυκύμαντη ιστορία της. Γιατί δεν είμαστε απλοί θεατές της εκδίπλωσής της: από μια άποψη, αυτή η ιστορία αφορά όλους μας, ειδικούς και μη, και είμαστε κληρονόμοι της μακραίωνης εξέλιξης όλων των άλλων οργανισμών. Ο Emerson δήλωσε κάποτε ότι στην πραγματικότητα δεν υπάρχει ιστορία, μόνο βιογραφία. Η ιστορία της ζωής είναι μια βιογραφία - η βιογραφία μας, η βιογραφία ολόκληρού του ανθρώπινου γένους. Κανένας δεν μπορεί να προσεγγίσει ένα τέτοιο θέμα χωρίς μια αίσθηση ταπεινοφροσύνης κι ανεπάρκειας σ' εφόδια.

Na een half jaar sporadisch een bladzijde lezen heb ik hem dan eindelijk uitgelezen. De mooie plaatjes geven de charme aan dit boekje uit 1974.

Time to add some non-fiction to my reading and take a break from sci-fi fantasy. This book is for readers like me. I have a bit of Biology education: Anthropology major in college, one genetics course(mostly mathematical in nature as I recall), and one "Biology for non-majors" course that satisfied my science requirement. My only previous experience in science was two h. s. courses I nearly flunked back in the early 60's. Still ... I am interested in this stuff and so far this book is easy enough to read as the author promised not to deploy a lot of bio-words. But ... we did get "sessile" early on - WTF? On the cover of my paperback the dice are arranged differently from the cover of the Greek edition(not pictured here). Different characters - of course! BTW, I have NOT read this book before - stupid Goodreads gizmo*&^%$#@!

Doing a bit of selective skimming here and there as the author provides more background than I'm wanting to read. Otherwise ... still OK.

Still skimming as the reptiles have had their day. Birds next ...

Into the homestretch with the part that we all love the best 'cause it's all about us HUMANS!

Finished a couple of nights ago with some technical stuff about evolutionary theory. Over my head ... but still, a worthy book, if a bit dated over the past 40 years or so. A nice overview ...
