New to model ships and only a few years into wood modeling, and I'm sure like everyone i was very intimidated by planking. Learning how to wrap complex curves with thin strips of wood is an immense challenge even for the otherwise accomplished modeler. YouTube helps, forums help, but this book, though rather dated, also helps. Obviously written by a well experienced and networked author, with plenty of research, this is a good guide for fundamentals and detailed techniques.
Reason i rate 4 stars, that said, is for two reasons. A: its rather dated, and could definitely use a revision. Some of the tools and materials recommended do not take into account many 21st century materials that are now widely available. B: i do not want beginners to take this as a "this is precisely how you plank a model". Much of it has technical jargon foreign to a beginner, and i feel it uses advanced models and scratch models as examples, despite entire sections on kits and solid hulls.
Very good background and snippets though. It's certainly helping!
