This book is very thorough, and great for a beginner crazy quilter. This book does indeed have eye candy, but even better has very thorough and complete instructions that range from choosing supplies through various methods of constructing a crazy quilt piece to embroidery and embellishment and on through finishing techniques including binding methods. It also covers, dyeing fabric, marbelizing and painting on fabric.
This one book covers all aspects of crazy quilting and even though I have bought other books, this book is the book I reach for for basic and complete information. The instructions are clear in both text and illustration and it gives the stitcher/quilter a place to let their own creative impulses fly. The only thing that would make this book the "complete guide" to crazy quilting would be the addition of a complete stitch dictionary.
This book is well worth adding to your embroidery/stitching/quilting library.
Michler offers a very interesting history of crazy quilting, as well as detailed instruction and advice pertaining to the many aspects of creating a crazy quilt. Besides a thorough discussion of fabrics and multiple piecing and finishing methods, Michler provides copious information on embroidery and other intricate embellishment techniques. She even explains how to dye your own fabric and ribbon to get just the shade you are searching for! I read this for a class I am taking, and I was surprised at the complexity of this method of quilting. It truly is an art form.
