My Universities, Maxim Gorky
Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) gives an exact account of his own adolescence. After the death of his mother, fourteen-year-old Alexei Peshkov ( Gorky ) sets out to earn his own living. First he is the errand boy in a shoe shop; then, in turn, a draughtsman's apprentice, a dishwasher on a Volga steamboat, and an apprentice in a studio where icons are painted. Repulsed by the ugly mediocrity of middle-class life, by the "senseless, stupid animosity poisoning the life around hi

"Doğrudan gözlemcisi olduğum hiçbir şeyin insanlara merhamet duygusuyla bir ilgisi yoktu; gördüğüm, yaşadığım her şey hemen tümüyle bu duyguya yabancıydı. Önümde göz alabildiğine açılan hayat, bitmez tükenmez düşmanlıklar, acımasızlıklar, beş para etmez şeylere sahip olma uğruna verilen bitmez tükenmez kirli savaşlarla doluydu. Bense yalnızca kitap peşindeydim, kitap dışında hiçbir şey umurumda değildi" (s.89).

The more I read Gorky, the more I like him. My Universities was a chance read, I have to admit. I found a vintage copy at home (probably one of my husband's books) and I read it in one sitting. Had I planned my reading, I probably wouldn't start with the last of his autobiographical books. No regrets, though. My Universities is a very powerful piece of writing and I enjoyed reading it. This book provides a painful insight into Russian society of the time. Moreover, it allows the reader to observ ...more

Yazar her şeye rağmen, kitap okumayı asla bırakmamış.

This book is one of the best stories of our time as it shows life as it is....the university of life is somewhere that teaches us the most important lessons which can not be learned any where else.

after reading 3rd & final book of Gorkhy's autobiography I confidently say he'd such power in his writings that he take the reader with him in his time, while reading I feel I'm with him he described even small things & activities which were happening that time, such a wonderful autobiography in a fascinating novel way.

This autobiographical novel has something beutiful and authentically Russian-like contained in it's covers. It is a story of a young man's struggle in the society on the verge of revolution. It is beautiful because it is sad and it rings true in reader's ears. Many life truths are being told in here, and many fascinating and eccentric individuals are walking through it's pages. So many in fact that sometimes it is hard to remember everybody, and that's it's only downfall. This story kind of remi ...more

One of the things I find interesting about Gorky, and to an extent other Russian authors, is how they can write in ways that would be completely unacceptable for writers today, for really basic reasons. For example, he might be talking about how depressed he was for some reason, and then start the next paragraph with "I was very happy and excited the day x and y happened." It's strange and jarring, but not necessarily an inaccurate depiction of life (which is episodic and erratic, after all).

A man exclusively self-taught. In his studies, he never majored in any disciplines. Instead, he obtained his learnership through thought and conversations with his friends. Random reading also contributed to his arsenal of knowledge. Though he started late in life, he laerned nevertheless. This passages have been edited from Henrick Ibsen's Peer Gynt. It brilliantly summarises the story here. The book, though small is a based on the actual life of Maxim Gorky.

Autodidacts are likely to devour this memoir of Gorky. Gorky never got to go to college and the title refers to great universities of life through which he passes through and the experiences that he has to go through. Since it's a memoir, one might not get to experience his literary prowess. But towards the end, there is a portion where he describes a house, where he was staying, on fire. His usage of metaphors to paint the image of a ravenous and furious fire made me want to move him up my TBR ...more

Enzovoort.
