Most of Murakami books were published as multi volume epic novels in original Japanese editions. I have not read Windup Bird Chronicle since it first came out in 1994. Actually, I had never finished it because I had to stop after traumatic skinning scene. (end of book 1).
Re-reading this with fresh mind 25 years later, I am amazed by this perfection of a novel. Well, at least this 1st volume of 3 volume series. It may be Murakami at his best.

Reading it in the original--

I find this much better than Jay Rubin's English translation which is riddled with cliches and clunky phrasing that the original doesn't suffer from. In fact, Murakami's metaphors and similes are quite amazing, and I don't know why but in English they sound okay at best.

Having read this years ago in English, I'm finding subtle threads, hints, and clues I've completely overlooked and am very grateful to see them.

One thing about this story that runs counter to the stand
I've come to expect this kind of high quality contemporary literature from Murakami and I wasn't disappointed. The story grows every page, slowly leading the reader into the heart of the mystery. There a still a lot of unanswered questions, but I expect them to be - partly - explained in the next volumes... or further complicated :P That's what I like about Murakami, he doesn't just throw mysterious stuff at you. Rather, he makes it just so that you think you might be starting to grasp what's go ...more

Vlastne nemám šajnu o čom to bolo, aká bola pointa knihy. Vôbec by som nevedela zhrnúť obsah. Divní ľudia, dva životné príbehy a okolo toho úvahy. Svojim spôsobom to bola vata všetko, nemalo to riadny dej, nič sa tam neudialo, ale Murakami píše skvelo, tak ma to bavilo a prečítam si aj pokračovania.

Quite good. After reading the first book side by side with the English translation, I want to keep reading and find out more about all the mysterious characters that have been introduced. It does, however, get a bit too surreal for me at times. Also, while I've found many of the characters interesting, I don't really feel that any of the characters are very likeable so far, especially the main character. Perhaps that'll change with the next two books. Anyhow, I feel that although the translation ...more

For the greater part of this first book, Murakami does a wonderful job of building a strange tension, introducing an array of slightly offbeat characters while revealing gradual hints of their backgrounds and connections. It was then a little disappointing that this culminates in an old man's recollection of the Second World War. Even though his story is no less curious than any before, it creates an unfortunate drop in pace and mood at the end of the book. Still, there is plenty left up in the ...more

Very boring, slow and confusing. Weird characters, weirder situations and, in my particular case, a horrible translation.

Book one of the Murakami three book Wind Up Bird Chronicles, in Chinese. I'm looking forward to the next two books which I've been told gets a lot better.
