این کتاب رو با این هدف مطالعه کردم تا ببینم چرا دین در بین مصریان باستان جایگاه ویژه‌ای داشته‌است.

پاسخی که من متوجه شدم: چون دست مصری‌های قدیم از زندگی کوتاه بوده!

مصریان باستان به طور میانگین، فقط ۳۵ سال عمر می‌کردند. ریزگردها باعث بیماری‌های تنفسی می‌شد. ذره‌های شن در غذای مصری‌ها وجود داشت و مینای دندان را از بین می‌برد. نوشیدن آب آلوده، بیماری‌های گوارشی مختلفی را برای مصری‌ها به‌دنبال داشت. دندان‌درد و عارضه‌های گوارشی، پدیده‌ای رایج و معمولی در بین مصری‌های باستان به‌حساب می‌آمد. رواج بیماری‌های دستگاه گوارش به‌اندازه‌ای بود که در دربار فرعون‌ها، سِمتی با نام «مقعد فرعون» برای تنقیه‌کردن پادشاه ایجاد شده‌بود. دانش طبیبان مصری، التیام چندانی برای درمان این عارضه‌ها به‌دنبال نداشت. در نتیجه مصری‌ها چاره‌ای نداشتند تا برای درمان، دست‌به‌دامانِ دین، جادو و طلسم شوند. اهالی مصر باستان در کنار اینکه راه‌های زیادی برای درمان بیماری‌ها نداشتند، از دلیل ایجاد بیماری‌ها نیز بی‌خبر بودند. در نتیجه باور داشتند عقوبت کارهایی ناشایستی که انجام داده‌اند، گریبان آن‌ها را گرفته و بیمارشان کرده‌است. از آنجایی که آگاهی و علم مصری‌های باستان، ناچیز بود و کار چندانی دربرابر بیماری‌ها و رویدادهای ناخوشایند نداشتند، خدایان بی‌شماری اختراع کردند تا برای درمان از آن‌ها کمک بگیرند. در نهایت، از دست این خدایان هم کاری بر نمی‌آمد و بیشتر مصریان قدیم، جوان‌مرگ می‌شدند. ترس از مرگ و نابودی، راه را برای مومیایی اجساد باز کرد تا امید به زندگی پس از مرگ، خیالی باشد برای پاسخ به ناکامی‌ِ مصریان باستان در این دنیا.

I absolutely adore anything to do with Ancient Egypt and Egyptology,so when I spotted this book in the library I thought it would be right up my street. However, I did not enjoy this as much as I anticipated. It was full to the brim with information, but it was all glossed over very quickly( which I understand is probably the point of this book), but when I found something interesting I was left wanting more. The writing is rather straight forward, to be expected since it is non- fiction, but I believe that even works of Non- fiction should not disregard language.A few spelling mistakes and word repetition appeared throughout,but nothing of consequence. The author tries to be relatable and makes a lot of jokes throughout the book, which I didn't appreciate, probably due to having no sense of humour :D Having said all that I do award it 3 stars as it is enjoyable, well researched and put together nicely with pictures and diagrams.

Surprisingly, very nice. Gives all the basic information, good job at introducing to the topic. Didn't particularly need the jokes (but that's a personal thing). Also, realization: travelling as a child turns out to be no fun at all in retrospect. I've been to Egypt twice and couldn't appreciate any of the awesomeness.

Estuvo interesante y me enseñó cosas que no sabía, sobretodo de la gente humilde. Matrimonios y ritos curiosos, sin olvidar los dioses principales y los faraones. La última mitad del libro se centra en la vida después de la muerte y me resultó un tanto pesada y se nota que es la parte más documentada y con más restos del antiguo Egipto. Tampoco aprecié que toda la bibliografía estuviera en francés y de autores pocco conocidos. Muy colegueo en mi opinión.

Very good introductory book with explanations full of sense humour, I loved it! Only problem is that they could add more visuals while explaining stuff, especially those related to architecture and discovered entities, I had to google them myself.
