Written with a great deal of care, incredible research and thoughtful analysis on a tragedy that, sadly, so few people know about (and largely became overshadowed by blitzes in London and Coventry). It's an astonishing work of non-fiction.

The Clydebank blitz has always been at the back of my mind. My grandfather was in the fire service in Edinburgh and was called to help- all I know is he fell through floors in a tenement building - I know no more as he died in 1988.

I knew so little of this part of world war 2 yet I was brought up in Edinburgh and knew so much more of the London blitz - which sometimes is portrayed as though apart from Coventry this was the only blitz. This feels a little like the Bethnel Tube disaster two years

My Great-grandmother died in the Blitz in Clydebank. As the author says in the book, most won't talk about what happened those two nights in 1941, and that has always been true in our family. So I am grateful to have the opportunity to read such a thoroughly researched and well-written history of this terrible event. It has actually given me enough information that I can ask more specific questions of my family (now whether they will answer them or not remains to be seen!). The only complaint I ...more
