The Cambridge History of Iran is an eight-volume survey of Iranian history and culture, and its contribution to the civilisation of the world. All aspect of the religious, philosophical, political, economic, scientific and artistic elements in Iranian civilisation are studies, with some emphasis on geographical and ecological factors which have contributed to that civilisation's special character. The aim is to provide a collection of readable essays rather than a catalogue of information. The volumes offer scope for the publication of new ideas as well as providing summaries of established facts. They should act as a stimulus to specialists, but are primarily concerned to answer the sort of questions about the past and present of Iran that are asked by the non-specialist. Volume I sets the physical stage for the human events which follow. In a sense it is a companion volume to the rest of the series. The whole volume is devoted to geography, geology, anthropology, economic life, and flora and fauna. The physical environment of Iran is seen not as an unmoving backcloth against which the human drama is played; rather it is seen as a natural element which shapes in distinct and recognisable ways the whole course of human activity in the country. Iran offers a picture of sharp identity as a geographical unit. In spite of highly varies and often harsh natural conditions at local level, a consistent and recognisable pattern of physiographical and climatic features emerges at the national level. Because of these features the Iranians as a people suffered many vicissitudes. The complex character of the relationship between terrain and people is the major theme of this volume.

جلد اول به جغرافیا ایران اشاره داره، و شاید خوندنش برای عموم خسته کننده باشه و کمی تخصصی در زمینه زمین شناسی زیست بوم و.....
با خوندن این جلد و پیش رفتن هر صفحه که میدیدم ایران ما چقدر وسیع بوده و کم‌کم از وسعتش به لحاظ سوء مدیریت کم شده انگار قلبم مچاله میشد

مجلد اول سری تاریخ ایران کمبریج کتابی است تقریبا بی‌ارتباط با تاریخ. نویسندگان و ویراستاران کتاب جغرافیای هر سرزمین را مهم‌ترین عامل در شکل‌گیری تاریخ آن می‌دانند و لذا جلد اول از این مجموعه را به بررسی جغرافیای سرزمین ایران اختصاص داده‌اند. این‌که رویکرد جغرافیایی در تبیین پدیده‌های تاریخی تا چه حد موفق از کار درآید امری است که بایستی پس از مطالعه کتب دیگر این مجموعه در مورد آن قضاوت نمود، هر چند که در تعمیم آن به تاریخ دیگر جوامع بایستی جانب احتیاط را رعایت نمود.

کتاب تقریبا 50 سال پیش نگاشته شده و مقالات مربوط به جمعیت، کشاورزی، صنایع و همچنین برخی اطلاعات مقالات آب‌نگاری، پوشش گیاهی و جغرافیای جانوری شرح وضعیت موجود نمی‌باشد. اما به‌روز نبودن مقالات می‌تواند از جهت مقایسه با وضع امروزی بسیار مفید باشد. مثلا می‌توان دید که از مدت‌ها پیش شروع به تخریب زیست‌بوم شمال نموده‌ایم (50 سال پیش از نگارش کتاب)، برای تامین آب جمعیت بیست‌میلیونی هم مشکلات عدیده‌ای داشته‌ایم، تنها دریاچه در خطر هامون است و ...

اکثر مقالات کتاب توسط اساتید دانشگاه‌های غربی نگاشته شده و شاید برخی از آن‌ها قابل استفاده برای خواننده عام نباشد، همان‌طورکه من از بخش‌های مربوط به زمین‌شناسی چیزی نفهمیدم و ناخوانده رها کردم. البته چنان‌که از قیمت نسخه اصلی کتاب پیداست، انتشارات کمبریج چندان هم در پی جذب مخاطب عام نبوده است!

جلد اول به شدت از کلمات و اصطلاحات زمین شناسی و آماری استفاده کرده بود که همین موضوع درک اون رو برای یک شخصی که خیلی اطلاعات جامعی در مورد زمین شناسی نداره خیلی سخت میکرد.

For those who are interested in The History of Iran, this 7 volume editions of Cambridge is a good source, especially the last 3 (5., 6. and 7. v.) which are edited by Peter Avery, Gavin Hambly and Charles Melville, published 1968 - 1991, mostly about the Iranian contemporary modern time (Pahlavis and the religious powers).
پنج مقاله از کل انتشارات تاریخ ایران، کمبریج، با عنوان "سلسله ی پهلوی و نیروهای مذهبی" توسط عباس مخبر ترجمه شده و در 1371 توسط طرح نو چاپ و منتشر شده است. دو مقاله ی آخر که توسط "حامد الگار" نوشته شده، از بخش های جالت این ترجمه ی فارسی اند.
